And was pretty sure of myself that I was going to get it. I had a spinal fusion done in Oct 08, and I applied before I had the surgery, but turned in all of my medical paperwork from it. I had a 10 hour surgery that resulted in 21 screws and 2 rods, and instrumentation to hook it all together. Before the surgery I had a very hard time, and after the surgery I am still having trouble. The paperwork says that I can find less demanding work, but my previous job WAS desk work, so what do they want me to do? I would be paid at least $850, I have three dependents and the first time I filed was in 06. I think honestly that they are trying to get out of paying the benefits bcz they think that I won't fight it this time. We really, really need the money and I am scared that I wont be able to find a job in these times with my disability. It is hard to sit for hours in front of a computer because of my spine, and it is hard to stand for hours, and I cannot pick up anything heavier than 2 gal of milk. They really confused me bcz they did acknowledge that I had several limitations on working. What should I do?

I answered your post on the anxiety page. The best group to join is the disability group. Here is the link: http://dailystrength.org/groups/so...

Hi it took me 3 years and I had to hire a lawyer, but I finally got it. They really only want to give it to overweight people or alcholics and drug addict, who have never really worked. I spent 25 years in a factory and suffered a dibiliting brain tumor and I had to wait over 3 years to get mine, They are really fast to give it to overweight people. or if you are the right race

marlla22:
I take GREAT offense to your post. I am not a minority, born white living in the USA, but I am NOT racist and there is no place for racism on this group. Many of my friends are minority and I dont think they'd be too happy about your post. How dare you say they give social security quickly to those who ar fat or "the right race". What exactly IS the right race? Is one group of people o a specific color the right race?People are people and if you cut us open - WE ALL BLEED RED. NO race is better than any other since social security is a federal program I can guarantee you they dont discriminate. Every time I think discrimination in the world is ending, some idiot statement like yours pops up.

Back to being denied....I've been denied 3 times and even once hired an attorney. I didn't make enough money in the quarter or my husband made too much money. We ended up filing for bankruptsy due to all the medical bills.
Now, I'll just have to wait (like the SS office said) until I'm 62. I'll probably be dead by then. Susie

I have a problem with marlla22 reply also. What does weight and race have to do with disability. There are people all over who abuse the system, but there are good people who need it also. It doesn't matter if you are overweight, if your white, black or in between. We are all people. That is stereotyping.
teenytania - keep trying. They say back injuries are the hardest cases to get. I have a friend and it took him almost 4 years. I know that isn't what you want to hear. And yes, I have been there. My husband is a disabled vet. I know what it is like to go without a check. Just keep filling out the paperwork. Make sure your Dr. is doing his part.

Here is my one cent worth (you know the economy is down LOL).
First off I think Marlla22 is intitled to her opinion. Unfortunately some people do seem to get SSDI easier than others. I don't know why but I am not going to say that race and size has nothing to do with it. Our government does creat laws that are supposed to "make things even" that really discriminate against the "non-minority". Sorry but I am convienced this is true and I am intitled to my opinion just like everyone else here. As for teenytania you do have to just keep trying. Make sure your lawer knows of all the things that you go through. Do as much research as you can about SSDI. There are many sites that help and explain just what you need to do. I do not have one disability. I have several things that all add up. Most people that know me would probalby think I am not disabled. It is not that I can't do anything. It is that I can't do enough long enough to make a living. Just hang in there and keep trying. OK all you people that think I am a racist let me have it........

Teenytania,
I was told by my welfare case worker that you will have to appeal. I too have filed for disability and have been denied. He told me they deny 80% of claims, the first time and they approve 80% when someone appeals. I asked him why they would deny someone if they are legitimately disabled. He shrugged his shoulders and said, to try and weed out those who aren't , but they do it at the expense of those who really are. Please appeal. I know what it is like to be without money while you are waiting, but you must appeal. I am still awaiting my appeal hearing and I am thinking of hiring a lawyer to represent me so i more assured that i will have all my ducks in a row and it will go through. I wish you great luck in going forward! Now to those who think people who re overweight get disability, I would not normally do this, or say this, but i weigh 340. i weighed close to that when I was injured and because of my weight survived an accident that would have killed me had I weighed less. i take offense to people who assume overweight people don't work. i worked for the same Home health agency for 11 years prior to my accident. Before that i worked in a nursing home and in 2 restaurants prior to that. I have worked since I was 15 and I was always overweight. During the initial questioning THEY asked me for my weight. THEY put it in there, not me. i have NEVER used my weight as an excuse. I was always very active and in great health. My weight never hindered me from doing anything I wanted to do. I am sorry, but that is just a sore subject to me. People sometimes treat overweight people like we are diseased or something. I have one skinny person in my whole family and she had to have gastric bypass and now has Crohn's Disease to get that way. Don't judge someone until you know the whole truth.

Hey I am protected by the constitution to say my opinion. If you don't like it lump it. Look around you, we suffer reverse discrimation everyday. Wake up. I see preferences everyday.

Doesn't make it right. I believe that most of us joined Daily Strength do do just that, give strength to others who are seeking it and to get some when we need it. How is making opinions about people you know nothing about giving strength. If someone is hurting does it really matter the color of their hair, eyes, skin or if they are fat or thin. They are humans and deserve our empathy. I shall say no more on the matter here because this is Teenytania's post about her frustration on the disability system. I apologize Teenytania for hijacking your post.
