Companies checking your credit

As I sit here filling out applications for employment and submit resumes I am amazed at what some of these companies ask for and what they do. I am so surprised that many companies do such an extensive background check looking at your credit history, driving record, etc.. I remember when they would do a check just for a criminal record and possibly a drug test and that was it. These days they want your social security number just for the application.

Ugh.. Does anyone else feel almost violated by the amount of information and checking companies do into your background? It's even more disturbing that a company can deny you employment based solely on your credit history.

" yeah, it really bothers me b/c not only it is invasive, but I will never land a job if my credit is checked. I think this is why I've heard no response on some applications I've submitted recently for min. wage positions. "

" I've applied for both entry level positions and mid-management positions and I am just really surprised at the level of personal information they want.

I find it to be a vicious circle...you need money to pay your bills on time and companies that are hiring don't want to hire you if you can't pay your bills on time. What a joke!! "

" I agree, I was appalled when I heard that companies were checking credit reports. My heavens is it any of their business, really? No! I have an excellent work history but poor credit due to, gee, not making enough money to pay everything on time. So what is the answer? I agree, so unfair, and just another example of how you get kicked when you are down. "

" I don't think that I will ever be able to work a job lifting or bending over or anything like that but maybe a desk job, but if they base it on my credit, and all of my medical bills are past due and on my credit then I will have no luck. What is the world coming to? Basing your job or car insurance on your credit history is crap. Your trying to get a job to get PAID, get paper, and clean up credit and pay bills, this country has lost it's mind. 10 years ago things were great and now it sucks everywhere you go...you can't move and get paid more and make it in a different place because it's bad everywhere. Good luck everybody!!! "

" The whole theory that individuals with good credit are more likely to be hard working, responsible employees is just crap. We should apply that same logic to these companies that can't manage their own funds/businesses like GMAC or WAMU.... "

" Isolated83, you are so right! And what happened to our HIPAA rights when it comes to our medical information? The medical bills showing up on the credit reports seems to me to be in violation of our rights under HIPAA, which is supposed to protect our privacy.
They probably get around that when ask applicants to sign the agreement to release credit information.
The world is so corrupt. It belongs to the young, healthy people with money. "

" Rachel2 HIPPA I think the government has 4gotten about the privacy act info, I think this is bogus..If it was up to me & I had my own bizness, I wouldnt look up a person's credit why thats not why Im hiring that person, Im looking 2 see if they had a criminal past & drivers license thats it. This world makes so hard 4 people like us 2 get a decent paying gig. "

" I agree it's pathetic that companies are checking your credit history for basic jobs. Your credit history should not be a factor in deciding if you can answer telephones, be a file clerk, etc. If you lose your job and can't find another one, how are you supposed to keep your bills paid up, you pay the necessities. If you can't find a job, how are you supposed to pay those bills. Sad that people look at people who had to file bankruptcy or their bills are behind like they are losers. If those people lost their job they would be in the same boat. "
