Suggestions to control pain for FD in femoral neck

I was diagnosed with FD in left femoral neck at 26 and proceeded to have bone graft done to buy time for possible hip replacement down the road. In Mar 08 it was discovered the cyst was back and due to the size,a fracture was imminent. Dr and I opted to buy more time for hip replacement and he did bone graft to fill cyst which was benign, inserted a rod thru femoral neck and use metal plate attached to femur to hold rod in place. Surgery went well but the pain is so severe sometimes I get very disheartened. I would love to speak to someone with similar procedure as neither physio therapist nor Dr's have treated this and do not have anyone to refer me to with same condition. Thanks

I also was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia in the femoral neck in March 08 at the age of 25. I had a bone graft in May but no rods or metal plates. I still frequently have pain in my hip and my doctor doesn't really know why except that it may be caused because of my bone being misshapen from the FD. The xrays still show a large area of FD in my hip so I wonder if my bone is really strong enough. My doctor has never mentioned anything about a hip replacement though, I hope it never comes to that. What kind of doctor are you seeing? Mine is a orthopedic oncologist and he has treated FD before. How long after your first surgery did the cyst come back?

hello I havent had the surgery yet.. I was diagnosed when I was 25...I've just started biphosphonate treatment...the doctor wants to try that for 3 months before I try surgery. I know where I live there weren't any doctors who had any understanding of FD so I have to go to another town...what state are you in? I eventually started asking the doctors offices around me if they had even heard of it and eventually was referred to someone at a cancer center, which is where i've been being treated since 11/07

I didn't qualify for surgery as the FD is in my skull. Just started Reclast treatment and I'm hoping for the best. After seeing a multitude of doctors, I found an endocrinologist to treat me. Of course there are no guarantees.
My doctor assured me that the FD would eventually burn out. No idea how long it would take. I wish you the best and relief.

Hello there the type of Dr's I have seen are both Orthopedic Surgeons. I had my first bone graft when I was 26 and the cyst started to show its ugly head about 12 years later - I was lucky - my original Dr was hoping for 5 yrs and I did get 12. Before my surgery in April 2008 we did try other things like therapy, acupunture, medication and crutches but all it did was buy some time. Surgery was imminent and now it has almost been a yr with the rod and plate and so far so good I guess. Pain is still there but at least the hip won't break, I see the Dr next month again for xrays - he will need to monitor it regularily for any breaking down in the cyst. I have FD also in the femoral neck and surgery is planned.
I have pain 24/7,using painkillers (paracetamol with cod. and indometacine). Tomorow i get a new painkiller advice, because hte ones I take aren't good enough anymore. I also walk with crutches. I not able to walk far. My excuse for my bad englisch it isn't my mother language. Because I'm a dutchy, living in the netherlands.. Since there isn't almost nothing in dutch on the internet about FD. So that's why I am looking world wide. greetzzss Ina
