LYRICA: side effect warning

In Feb 08, my rheum. suggested I try Lyrica for my Fibro pain. I'd heard good things about it so I agreed to give it a go. I followed the directions carefully & watched for any of the side effects in the package insert from the pharmacist. I did get some fatigue (but it also could've just been Fibro acting up) & I did get some pain relief. Round about the 2nd week, I got into the shower to shampoo my hair when I noticed an inordinate amt of it was fallong out (!!!). After a few more days, my long hair had become so scraggly that I had to chop it into a short bob with short bangs (not nice on my face). I went online & was shocked to learn that ALOPECIA was one of the more obscure possible side-effects of this medication. Scarier still, the Alopecia can be permanent! I discontinued Lyrica immediately & notified m rheum & the pharm. Neither of them were aware that this side effect was possible! If any of you are taking this med & are experiencing hair thinning, do not dismiss it. This stuff could make you go bald. It'll make 2 yrs in Feb & I was fortunate enough to have my hair grow back. By Feb, it'll be as long as it was before the Lyrica. Just thought I'd put that out there...just in case...

" Ciel, first of all, love your 'name'. If I remember my french, means heavens, moon and sky?

Thanks for the warning on the Lyrica. Was tempted to try it before finding this site -- has helped me tremendously. Was it you asking about the night sweats? Can't find the post now. could be perimenopause, the estrogen cream isn't as potent as the pills.

I was on the pills for 10 yrs before they started to scare people away from them.

Ask your gyno about it, they don't seem to be as worried about prescribing it for a short period of time as they were a few years ago.

good luck! "

" Hi this is my first post on daily strength - have had fibro for 10 years. I have taken lyrica for 9 months. Initially it helped and then did nothing except i wondered if it had anything to do with weight gain? i went off it about 5 weeks ago and while i am in pain it is no worse more days than when I was on it. In other words it did not seem to do anything for me -(not the wonder drug that I had heard about) I also feel that i am more present and not living behind a cloud. I feel I owe this to my family - to be there for them I mean.
i am in the lucky position of only working 1 day outside of the home and can suit most days to how I am feeling.
http://fibrofiles.blogspot.com/ is my blog which i have just started "

" The name means sky moon stars. I'm glad you like it!

I DID ask about the cream since it might be an option for me to try. I'll definitely inquire. thanks!

Lyrica can cause weight gain. Somehow, the risks seem to outweigh the benefits with this medication. "

" The commercial for Lyrica, has a huge list of potential side effects. In fact, lol, I think the commercial has more side effects then info on the drug. But I guess they all sound like that. "

" I'm glat it is at least doing you some good. Muscle spasms are not pleasant! Please watch that hair loss. It can turn into something very severe. Did the wight gain come because it increased your apetite or does the medication slow the metabolism? "

" Of all I've read from people who take or took Lyrica I wouldn't want to be in the same room as the drug. Though Neurontin has made me fat and I do plan to wean down, way down in dosage. Didn't cause weight gain until I was up'ed to 2400 mgs. One guy I know who is slim told me Neurontin is the only thing that ever made him fat. He quit taking it. I barely have an appetite at all and eat low fat, low carb, low sodium, small portions and cannot lose 1 lb, this really sucks.

Wendy, you could try muscle relaxers for the cramps.

" I took Lyrica for a year and got tired of my brain not being able to function. I could not remember words, my husband and kids had to finish sentences for me. We switched to Cymbalta and had the same benefits, but no mental side effects and no other side effects that are obvious. I take a lot of meds for fibro and RA, so it is hard to tell with the sweats and fatigue which is causing those. I really do not recommend Lyrica after reading info on it lately. "

" I took Lyrica for about a month and found that I had trouble finding words when speaking and I was more unsteady on my feet than usual. Needless to say I stopped the Lyrica. "
