Hello everyone,

I've been reading Dr. amand & Claudia Marek book ( what your doctor may not tell you about fibromyalgia . the revolutionary treatment that can reverse the disease ) and just finished it couple of days ago . I'm really impressed but I wonder if he's for real and does his protocol really works ?

He uses guaifenesin in treating his patients and says it can reverse one year of fibromyalgia in two months !!

Has anyone read this book or tried the protocol ?

" Here is the correct site if you are interested in the guai protocol http://www.fibromyalgiatreatment.c...

I will tell you my experience only.

In January of 08 I was referred to a "FM Specialist" by my podiatrist. I was surprised to find this doctor because he didn't come up in any search or inquiry I made seeking a doctor who treats FM in my area. He had recently relocated form Michigan where he said he had a FM clinic.

My experience with him was mixed. He said that he believed in Dr. St. Amands Guaifenesin protocol and that is how he would treat me. He was the first doctor to give me narcotic pain meds. He also had a list of expensive supplements he wanted me to take., including Guaifenesin.

He took tons of tests and listened to my story and it was such a relief to finally talk to a doctor that seemed to understand.

He was the first to also diagnose my CFS. And he wrote a wonderful letter of disability that I have used for everything from my LTD insurer, to getting a reduced rate on my utilities.

The downside was that they didn't send me a bill until I had been going there for 6 months. OMG! He charged $400 per hour and insisted that I come 3 x weekly. Each lidocaine shot was $200. And he usually gave me 3 of them before he started working over and tormenting my body. Then I started getting the bills from Quest which ran in the thousands of dollars.

The worst was he felt that by forcing your joints in physical therapy to bend and move rapidly that it would work out the calcium phosphate. This PT is what put me in a wheelchair for the last 2 years. He hurt me terribly and my body never recovered.

I stopped seeing him after I got the bill. I couldn't afford him and still have not finished paying him. I took his supplements for over a year and found no difference and quit taking all of them except for the Guai. I did stop that too for a few months because I had no money. But then I started again a few months later and have continued to take it religiously and it now has been about a year and a half.

Something suddenly made me start feeling better a few months ago. The only thing different in my regimen was adding 1000 u of Vit D. I think it may be possible that it is the Guai. They say it takes a year before you start to feel any better.

I don't follow the protocol and this doctor didn't believe you had to do that either. He said if I felt that salicylates were a problem then to just increase the amount of Guai. I also didn't need to go on the special diet because I'm not hypoglcemic.

I have not read the book and don't know any more about it than the website.

All I know is that I'm up and walking again. I've been shopping for the first time in almost 2 yrs. I've even put together a bookshelf today. I'm still in terrible pain and can't work and have serious cognitive problems. I still have bad IBS and insomnia. But I am doing better. I just wish I knew for sure. I'm waiting for the big crash because I just have a hard time believing that something like Guaifenesin could make this much of a difference. "

" great story but a money hungry dr. he was only interested in money and never said anything to u. thats horrible and I wouldn;t pay him a cent but would turn him over to the AMI.. bet you won;t be the first one. I take vitamin d and a multi one each day and other than that my dr said not one drug nor pain management will ever work. so take it easy and do what your doing .. has to be right as your working again. hugs gail "

" Thanks daisy100
for your reply and the website.

Hi youdontlooksick ,
Thank you for sharing your experience . I'm sorry you had to go through all that before feeling better. But dr.Amand insists in his book that anyone on the guaifenesen protocol should avoid salicylates , or it will block
the guai action in the body .
please keep posting your progress using guai . "

" Wishful thinking ! He has a majic wand too ! LOL ! I've never heard of anyone with Fibro here in my world "cured" or in this case "reversed" from Fibromyalgia. I bet he followed the yellow brick road and then the "WIZARD OF OZ" told him that he can make good money from panicky suffering Fibro people looking for a miracle. LOL !! Maybe he even fancys himself a wizard. LOL ! When this latest crazy called "guaifenesin" cure was sweeping the internet last time, I was a newly diagnosed Fibro victim desperate for a "cure" or at least some relief. It will leave your pockets empty along with your hopes. "

" True ouchy. This was the latest fad a couple of years ago. You don't hear about it much anymore because those who religiously followed the protocol never got better.

I would love to hear Dr. Amand's take on XMRV! LOL "

" Hi Angel,

I tried that last year and it didnt work for me. Plus, I couldnt take any pain meds with it and that made me feel WORSE. No scented lotions or anything that I enjoyed. My pain never subsided. My SIL also tried it for longer than I had and no results for her either. :( If you try, I hope it works for you!

TO GGHCGAIL: I cant believe your doc said no pain med or pain management will ever work? What a loser! He knows NOTHING about pain and absolutely does NOT respect you or himself for that matter. I would dump him like last nights trash AFTER I bring him a stack of articles PROVING pain management is the way to go as well as 99% of us on here who TAKE PAIN MEDS are able to continue to function. Including myself. "
