Taking me Off Pain Meds

I'm not sure exactly how I should respond to my doctor on the subject of pain medications.

I have been put on narcotics by my doctors for pains (migraines and fibromyalgia mostly) it was their recommendations after several other medications failed to do the trick.
Then, one by one. These doctors each decided they would no longer use narcotics in their practice. So, I had to go out and find another GOOD doctor and one who had no qualms using narcotics on patients THEY felt required it.

Fast forward. My Pain Specialist has kept me on narcotics while trying other alternatives, so far the narcotics are still required in addition to other medications and treatments.
He suddenly asked me "What do you think would happen if you stopped taking the narcotic?" Of course I told him I didn't know for sure but that I suspected my pain would increase, not in a manner dealing with withdrawl symptoms.
Then he dropped the subject.
At the end of my last appointment he tells me that he is going to take me off the Narcotics unless I can give him a valid reason for prescribing them. =\
I reminded him that it was for Migraines and later, Fibromyalgia and because other conventional meds were not effective.
Now he claims Fibromyalgia is NOT treated with Narcotics. We did our song and dance, me saying that YES several people with FMS are helped by Narcotics. It's usage only depends on each doctors opinion.

He wants me to do this special inpatient program to find out what is cause me so much pain, and getting worse. He seems upset by the fact that I no longer have any life and he hasn't been able to turn that around.
On the other hand, he's demanding I see a Psychologist to reveal that all my ailments are just "in my head".

I am confused... He has me on 120mg of Avinza (morphine) extended release pills. The #2 reason I decided to pick him as my doctor out of many was that initially, he was a doctor that wasn't afraid to use narcotics and such in his practice.
Now he's telling me that Fibromyalgia doesn't cause enough pain to warrant the usage of these highly monitored drugs.

Little bit of sarcasm and spite in there yes...

" UGH. Plain and simple, he is a uncaring, ignorant jerk. HOW DARE HE tell you that Fibro doesnt warrant pain meds! Ugh, EXCUSE ME? I had one of my pain nurses tell me on two seperate visits that SOME findings have shown that pain meds do not help fibro. BOTH TIMES I set her straight and told her, YES THEY DO! I take it. It helps. End of story. I absolutely cannot STAND when someone tries to tell you how YOU feel. I would drop him. "

" I have just been to a pain mgmt facility where the doc took me off all my pain meds including my Lyrica. As soon as I was coming off the meds, I experienced red, hot, painful palms of hands and feet. I couldn't do anything for myself- had to have help from my b/f! Geesh, I've never felt so low and disable in my life.
Don't let your doc take you off your pain meds- the side effects are extremely painful! "

" I would find yourself a new doctor. They can't tell you what kind of pain you are feeling. Has he had fibro? probably not so he can read all the medical journals he wants but still won't know what it feels like, plus it varies per person and so does medicine.
Keep going until you find a right doctor that will help you with your problems not tell you your'e crazy.
sending hugs and prayers your way "

" I'm always surprised to find dr's who won't prescribe. I left my rheumy because he kept wanting to give me more and more drugs. his take on it was.....if you are diabetic and you addicted to insulin? No you are dependent for quality of life....he felt the same way about fibro drugs. Unfortunately, i don't tolerate pain meds so am trying PT, massage, and creatine. So far, a lessening of the pain without the drug hangover I was always having.

Good Luck! by the way, the pain mgt docs did seem to be more sympathetic. "

" find a new DR. ...he may be right or wrong about the pain meds(our uptake inhibitors in our brain do not use pain meds very well therefore usually quite ineffective for our pain). HOWEVER he is wrong to comment on the level of pain and obviously full of shite in that area...find a new DR! This is a real disease with real pain plus a ton of other symptoms...no one needs to be disbelieved by some DR that is supposed to be helping you/me/anyone else. "

" There is some research to validate the pain receptor theory but the thing they always forget is that WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. They want to go with statistics when what they are dealing with is PEOPLE in PAIN.

When you have a treatment that works, and you're not abusing the meds, in my opinion it's criminal to take that away for such bullshit reasons. This violates the "first do no harm" provision of the oath all doctors take, and somebody needs to call them on it, loudly and publicly. "

" frankly my pain is so sever with out meds that I would takemyself to the hospital if I was out of meds with no hope of relfilling them. I at least have the benifit of having been to a psyciatrist and being treated for bipolar. WHile I hate teling my docs that I am bipolar because that throws up a red flag but at least I can state that I am stable and not in a depressed state and that that idea is ruled out.

I seriouslyfeel like I would cut off my lgs with out meds....ANd I know I sound a bit dramatic (so my mom has told me) when I say that but frankly its true. Im sorry but when your in a sound sleep and the pain wakes you and you take meds in your sleep (yes I know which meds to take while in the dark and sleeping state sadly) and have to crawl in the bath to let the meds kick in they have to find someway to kep you sane.

If they took away my pain meds I would become depressed. I would be in tears all the time... and I am sure I would appear distraught to my docs. The low dose of meds (in my opinion-vicoden 5/500 about 3 times a day and ultram 100 mgs about 2-3 times a day) iM ON to make my life remotely tolerable is a small thing to ask for.

ANy way Im sorry fr my little rant.. but this is actually a fear I have with all the problems that so many on here have had to face.

I think if they wanted to put me in patient and see just what happens if they take my meds away I would ask them if they saw the pain I suffered and were un able to find other solutions, basically if i played thier game would they be willing to go back to helping me with medication to have some stability and quality of life. If they said that no matter the out cme the answer was no then I would find a new doc as much a I hate that idea.... If they said yes they would help I would give them the chance to see what they could do, and if there was other options out there.... "
