I still have gotten the go ahead on my dog at my apartment. I have a doctors note because I have depression and anxiety and my Psychiatrist has given me a note to get a dog. I have some allergies and would like to get a poodle mix. I like the maltipoos. They are a maltese and a poodle mix. I don't want a tiny teacup one but not one bigger than a large cat. My last cat was 12 pounds. No more than her. I problem is that there are not many breeders around where I live. The pups in NY,Ny are too much and the breeders with farther out seem less expensive. I don't want to get a dog from the airport though. I would like to see where they where raised and how they act. Has to be friendly and cuddly. I live near Rochester Ny. I have money saved up but really don't want to spend more than $500. I know alot you are saying go to pound. I had a dog from the pound when I grew up and she was great but I really want a certain dog and a puppy. I am not sure if I wiil be able to have children so i really want a puppy! I turned 37 yesterday and my boyfirend is helping a friend move and has been gone since Thursday. Not home untill late late Monday. So I am suppose to have a belated birthday but I have been very lonely and wish I had someone to celebrate with this holiday weekend at least. I am looking into warm water therapy so I can get more exercise without hurting. I am not getting enough relieve on meds my doctor changed me over too. I am going to have to call her and see what I can do. The Soma is doing much for my muscle tension. I have been on before and grown tolerant. Maybe this why it is working well. I am depressed. I really wish I had that little dog now. Pray they say yes and I don't have to fight them with this. I could use a hug.

Hugs and Happy Birthday. You are so lucky that you can have a dog where you are-my sister had picked out a Pomeranian like hers and she was going to give it to me. I live alone and would have loved the companionship-landlady said no. I did think about trying it as a pet therapy, but even my PCP said it wasn't a good idea at the time.
Enjoy- Angel

I have 3 dogs, 2 big and 1 small. My idea of a small dog though is 20-25 lbs. There is nothing better than having your dog right with you when you are in pain. They sense it and come when you need them. I whole heartedly believe that any dog will help with depression and the excersize they provide helps with the pain.
Good luck and you are in my thoughts. Amanda

Hey There,
Well as a small show breeder of Maltese dogs, I can tell you that they are indeed hypo-allergenic. You're not going to like what I am about to say to you though. First of all, please DO NOT purchase a mixed dog from a breeder, or any dog that does not come from a reputable show breeder. These are people who do not care about genetics and do not do the proper health testing, often with the result being very sick dogs. If you can not afford to pay the price up front, you might be likely to pay later with expensive health bills that rack up with a sick dog that will always cost you a lot of money. The cheapest part of a dog is the initial cost. Maltese are expensive with their grooming costs, which rack up anywhere up to $100 per month. If you are dead set on getting a dog, please rescue one in need of a home from www.PetFinder.com. You can also ask reputable show breeders about their "retirees" . These are dogs that have been retired from the show ring and breeding. Often they are younger than you would ever think because reputable breeders often retire them at a young age. I do find these little babies very theraputic, but they can be very expensive to keep up with preoperly and when you go ahead with a backyard breeder or anyone who tries to breed for the greed, you run in to a high risk for bad genetics. Best of luck to you!

Here's a website you could talk to about a toy poodle. They seem like reputable exhibiter breeders. Ask them about their retirees.

I got a Silky Terrier last year and she is the most wonderful companion. I know the breeder and got to meet my puppy the day she was born. Before getting her, though,I checked around for a long time, and looked into several breeds before deciding on this one. The initial cost seemed expensive but this breed doesn't seem to have as many possible health problems as some.
This breeder has several females and retires her mothers at a relavtively young age. My puppy's mother had the best temperament of any dog I've ever met, and she was retired and found a wonderful home. The advantage there is getting a dog that's already trained. Puppies need lots of time and attention which can be hard on fibros, but my husband helps a lot. Hope things work out for you.

I am still praying that you get a dog. I have a few tips for you though - I know you want a puppy, but with fibro a young or adult dog may be more beneficial. Especially in an apartment if you plan to take it outside up and down stairs to go outside to potty. A young or adult dog is more than likely going to be somewhat trained already. They can be just as cuddly and loveable as a puppy. Next try to look up the landlord tenant laws for your area and the ADA (American Disability Act). In my state your landlord can not keep you from having an animal if it is declared a therapy animal. They can make you pay a pet deposit though.
My mom has a maltese and she has to go the the groomer once a month. When they were having hard financial times, I would go over and cut her hair. It isn't easy to do yourself. My sister has a pomeranian and that thing is really wild. Or at least she is when company comes. I have a pekingese and she is a good dog. I got her as a pup and have trained her to use a puppy pad for pottying but she still has some accidents. Some days cleaning them up hurts me so bad. I would recommend a dog with medium length hair. Not so much it has to go to the groomer often, but enough that you can sit and brush its hair. Don't forget that pups require lots of time and attention. You probably have days where it hurts too much to get out of bed. I hope you find one soon, they are good therapy.

I would google 'small breed rescue'. Many dogs who need to be adopted live in foster homes and you can get info on the dog's background. This can also be true of a high quality shelter. Also a good rescue organization will have you promise that if things don't work out you will return the dog to them...not to anyone else... so you don't have to worry as much ......I have 3 dogs......my smallest one (about 22 lbs) sleeps on the part of my legs that hurts the most........the warmth and pressure decrease the pain and he finds this spot all on his own!
I often wonder how I would have made it through my fibro/ flare-ups without the love of my dogs. Best wishes and enjoy your new pup.
