Many of us have IBS...with Diarrhea .. this means we can get Dehydrated Real fast..
yesterday I had a follow up appointment, and they checked my electrolytes, said I was low...Told me to drink gatorade, or if I was not feeling better shortly, to come in and they would start an IV...this scared me a bit..but I have been running to the bathroom ALOT the past 2 weeks cuz of the meds I was on..I am not fond of gatorade..am drinkin it..but just don't care for it.. I had been drinking about 100 ounces of water per day while taking meds..but apparently that is not enuff {Plain water I mean} to get the electrolytes replaced.. is there another way I can get these replaced ?? from what I have read, electrolytes are VITAL !! Who knew !! and why didn't they tell me to get on something like that to begin with ?? but this hospital here really didn't tell me anything...how long to stay on the soft diet...what kinds of things to stay away from... that with as hard as they hit me with antibiotics I SHOULD get on a probiotic right away... Why do Dr.s NOT tell you this stuff ?? am Pulling my hair out here.. having a crappy day..feel sluggish.. Posted on 12/12/09, 12:12 pm |

Dakota, I'm sorry you're having a crappy day. Seems you need to use some of that TLC you're always giving everyone else on yourself!
Here, the firefighters drink Emer'gen-C when they are fighting one of the big fires we often get in CA. That can be bought at Walmart. It contains 1,000mg of vtamin C, along with Vitamins B1, B6 & B12. Plus Magnesium, Zinc, Sodium, Potassium & Manganese. The Non-Active ingredients are: Viatmin B2, Niacin, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid & Calcium. I don't know if you'll like it any better than Gatorade or if it will help you like Gatorade, but it's an alternative to Gatorade. I don't care much for Gatorade either, but I can tolerate the Grape flavor. Hope you feel better soon! Hugs, Sam

Hi Dakota sorry your going through this. Doctors do really need to talk more with their patients. I am glad your doctor had a fallow up visit for you and did do the testing for the electrolytes so could catch the problem before it got worse. Because the doc. recommended the gatorade would try to stick with it as much as you can to see if it will bring your electrolytes back to normal and ask the doctor if there is something else you could try to get them back up because you do not like the gatorade. I would also call back and ask when or how long before you should have this re tested. My personal feeling is that he should of said a time to come back to get this rechecked if he did not to make sure things were getting back on track and not just said if you do not feel better shortly to come back. The IV works quickly to restore the electrolytes. When my husband would need these you would notice a difference in how he felt within a very short time.
I hope you feel better soon and everything gets back on track for you. Here is a website that gives some tips on replacing electrolytes http://www.ehow.com/how_2209167_re... Take care gentle hugs

Hi Dakota,
I am really sorry, this is going on, you all ready been through too much. I get this issue to from time to time. I got some thing else, not really fond of Gatorade ether. Can't remember the name, but it sounded ok, and it said on the bottle the same thing the Gatorade did. It was grape flavored. Going to check out the link too, thanks for posting this. Helpful. Hope your feeling better soon my friend. Gentle hugs, Sherrall

Get those probiotics girl!!! IBS and then all those antibiotics.....you need those now! in fact, anyone with gastrointestinal issues should be on probiotics.
Wow...I just did some reasearch and was shocked by how many medical sites recommend probiotics for IBS. They all seem to agree that a multl strain probiotic is the best and that one particular strain, Bifidobacterium infantis, is especially effective for IBS. Another cool thing is that they're beginning to see a link between IBS and migrains and that probiotics can help with both! I know you've taken supplements made by Nature's Way and I found a site that recommended this probiotic for IBS. It's Nature’s Way Primadophilus Optima. Then I went to the site that I usally get my stuff from and they had if for about $35.00 for a 2 month supply. Do a search with the words "IBS and probiotics" and you'll get lots of good info on it.. As for the electrolytes, foods rich in potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium all produce electrolytes. Leafy greens, legumes, tomatoes, some fruit.....they'll help. Or take a magnesium/potassium supplement too. Magnesium is very beneficial for those with fibro. I hope you're feeling better soon. How scary that your levels got that low! Big Hugs!

I'm sorry you are feeling bad. I deal weekly with patients who get dehydrated - including my dad. It's something you don't want to mess around with, because if certain levels get too low (i.e. sodium, potassium) your body can get in trouble. Gatorade is one we always recommend, and they have come out with some better flavors....plus, it works.
If they want to give you hydration via an IV at any time, I would go with it. Like I said, the damage of levels getting too low is not good. We finally have his levels under control, but because I researched what can happen, I take it very seriously. Be well, Blessings, Jan
