Need SSI Advice!!

My story is a long one but I'll try to keep this as short as possible. Any help or advice would be wonderful!

It's been about 21/2 years since I first filed for Social Security. I was denied twice and now have a court hearing for December. I worked with a lawyer after my first denial thinking that it would help. Long story short, he drove me crazy to the point that I had to fire him a few months ago. He was insisting that I spend hundreds of dollars, which I obviously don't have if I need SSI, on medical records that SSI already has..

My question is this...do I hire a new lawyer to accompany me to the hearing in December or is it wise to go it alone? My ex-lawyer (lol) has already written the judge of my case and demanded that he still get compensation although he will not be helping me. This guy is a real piece of work..

Thank you all so much for all of your support! I know I'll get some good advice from some wise people!!

" I'd try another lawyer. It took you this long to get the hearing date. I'd hate to see you loose your case because you didn't to file a form you didn't even know existed. "

" I think it's foolish to go to a hearing without an attorney. It is really hard to fire a lawyer after they have already done work on your case. I know because I did it. They have to sign off on a special form. If you don't make sure this is done and you win your case, that old attorney may be able to take your winnings. You need to get a new attorney ASAP and make sure the old one is no longer attorney of record before your hearing.

SS will pay the attorney before you get paid.

You are talking about SSD not SSI correct? "

" youdontknowme, is right here. Besides the social security system is difficult as it is. It does take someone who understands their retape.

If you are uncomfortable with your lawyer, I think you need a new one period. You are talking of hiring someone to help you with a major life issue! This is not fun and games, this really affects how you are going to do. And you are paying him! You are his customer..look at it as a business decision not emotional one. "
