Shower Accessories Rant

I realized the other day that I need shower accessories. I need a seat for the shower and a bath rail to get in and out because my legs sometimes dont move. I get paralysed with pain and I literally cant move.
Im only 37, I shouldnt need these things! What's worse is...they're so bloody expensive! I mean, these items are usually marketed to elderly people who are on a fixed income...how are they expected to pay $80+ for a seat and $40+ for a single rail??? INSANE! AND..today, being in so much pain, I went to my pharmacist and asked her if she knew of ANYTHING that works for nerve pain. She told me...pretty much nothing will work for it. She suggested 2 meds, both have horrible side effects though and no guarantee that they'll work. She asked if I used Lyrica. I told her yes, and told her Im off it because of the side effects. She said any other meds will likely be the same. I feel like Im losing all hope of every getting any better. Posted on 11/06/09, 06:11 pm |

Some good news....my insurance company at work said they'd pay for the items under my Health Spending Acct.
I do most of my shopping online because it's difficult for me to get around and stand/walk so having to go from store to store to get these items wouldve been a pain. I can order them online from 1 place and the ins. co. will reimburse my full amt. including shipping costs. They said since I already have a medical file, I wont need medical info from my doc. to have them covered. Thank goodness! When I see my doc. on Wednesday I'm going to talk to him about Gabapentin and get his thoughts on it. Thanks everyone for your help :)

I completely understand what your feeling. I'm only 23 and experiencing the exact same thing. I have all sorts of bath room disability accessories and it is plain humiliating. I too tryed Lyrica but it didn't help me and the side effects were horrible! Every med for this likes to make me fat.
The only pain med that has helped me is the fetinol (sp wrong) transdermal patch but I was only given it once in the ER and have never recieved it again even though I've gone to the ER in pain many many times. I feel like they don't believe me bc I'm so young and I don't look like I'm disabled.

Unduki...I just found out [literally about 1/2 an hr. ago] that Lyrica and Gabapentin are pretty much the same drug...given what I went through with Lyrica already, I dont think I'll be talking to my doc. about anything similar.
I need something for the pain, I just have no idea what. Nothing seems to work.

Abotsd, I use a lawn chair also. Cheap. I have the hand held showerhead to rinse under everything. Showering or bathing is such an undertaking. It's quite exhausting. I know there are times when just brushing my hair is a feat. That's why it's short now. Good luck with getting what you need. If all else fails improvise ! My heart goes out to all you young people. It's so hard to be afflicted with this disease when you should be running life at a fast pace. So sad...
