No restorative/REM sleep...

I saw my sleep specialist to get the results of my sleep study from a month ago. The main thing found was that in the 7.5 hours I slept at the center, I had no restorative/REM sleep at all. I guess on average people have 5 REM cycles in an 8 hour period. I have 0. He said this is quite common for people with Fibro. He said this is why we are so tired and why our pain can be even worse. I usually have to sleep about 12-14 hours a night to feel my best and even then sometimes I'm still tired. Anyone else been told this? Have you learned anything more about this? I'm curious about other sleep studies and sleep disorders too. Thanks all!

Hi April,
I had a sleep study done about 2 years ago and it showed that I do not get REM/restorative sleep. I was not one bit suprised to get this information. I have had sleep, or lack there of problems most of my life. Mine started out as a child, being watchful in sleep for intruders (stepdad and anyone else). He was an abusive man, and add to that, being raped at 6 years old by our neighbor that was 18. I had for the last couple decades or so taken meds that just plain knock me out, but that does not get you to REM. I agree that people with fibro deal with lack of good sleep issues, some more than others. I've tried over-the-counter, natural, and rx meds to help to get a good nights rest, but it evades me. Good luck finding a solution to your sleep problems.

Hi. I'm am planning to ask my doctor after the first of the year for a sleep study. However, my symtoms are completely different than yours. For me, if I ever got 7.5 hours of sleep, I would be exstatic. My usual sleep pattern (and has been for years), is to fall asleep fairly quickly, but wake up 3-5 hours later and that's it for the sleep. The last couple of months, I have been taking Ambien every night and I do get sleep for about 7.5 hours and I'm in heaven for this, but know that I can't continue taking sleeping pills forever, nor do I want to.
Anyway, I'm concerned about doing the sleep study because I'm afraid I wont go to sleep at the study... ha ha. When I'm in a strange place, it is not unusual for me to stay awake all night. Anyway, this is my sleep disorder...

I have the same problem. No matter how much I sleep, I never feel rested. But extra sleep does help a little because if I don't get at least 8 hours of sleep, I'm pretty out of it the next day.
I had a sleep study done about 5 years ago. I was told that I don't fully get into to the stage 4 of sleep. He said it was like I have 1 foot in stage 4 and 1 foot out of it. He said that every time I try to get there, I had some sort of arousal in my brain and it caused me to come out of stage 4. The only thing I was told was to practing healthy sleeping habits (8 hours, dont read or watch tv in bed, go to sleep at the same time, etc.). I wonder now though if there is any more advice. My research then led me to something called alpha eeg anomoly. I read some stuff on it, but no treatments at the time. Not sure if that has changed though. Would be nice to wake up just ONE morning feeling refreshed. One can wish. V

I was just diagnosed with FM, osteoarthritis, and Bursitis of the hips.
I really don't like taking meds. So I asked that we start low on the meds and alter them as we go. He prescribed me Mobic for the arthritis, and flexiril to help me relax and sleep, and ultram for the pain. I'm wondering if anyone has taking the flexeril and if so did it help you to sleep and feel more energized?

Sleep is a huge problem for me, always has been. Never had a sleep study but I can imagine I get 0 cycles naturally. It is completely impossible to get more than maybe 1 1/2 hours sleep without help. I've tried everything natural under the sun and no luck. I've concluded that it will never be any different for me.. I'm screwed.

I had the sleep study done and I too had absolutely no REM sleep. I was also diagnosed with moderate Sleep Apnea, meaning I woke up multiple (more than 25) times during the night.
I was referred to a specialist who made a device for me that I wear in my mouth to sleep with that keeps my airway open. This prevents me from waking up so many times during the night and I am now getting REM sleep.
