Amitriptyline & Gabapentin meds...

I saw the pain specialist for the first time today. He prescribed Amitriptyline 25mg at bedtime and Gabapentin 300 mg 3X a day (going up to 3X a day slowly). I was taken off the Trazadone I have been on for 10 years or so. Has anyone had or have experience with these medications for fibro? What was your experience?

I feel great about this doctor. He does not prescribe narcotics and he does a urine drug screen at every appointment. The weird thing was that my drug screen came back positive for methamphetamine's. I have never used meth my ENTIRE life. I hate that crap. He said the Ranitidine (generic for Zantac) could cause a positive meth result so he has to send it in to the lab. I though this was so weird because it has happened to me before. A few years ago I was tested before given a medication and I was positive for meth. I was so upset I was in tears. Every other test came back negative and I was on the Ranitidine at the time then too. It is so frustrating.

Thank you all. I am nervous about starting new meds. Especially since one causes weight gain and I am trying so hard to loose weight. I have lost 25 pounds and have 60 more to go before my wedding in 14 months. :)

" I take both - 50mg of Amitriptyline at night and only 300mg of Gabapentin per day. I only take the 300mg out of choice. I figure the longer I can take low doses and still have some help with the pain - the longer I have that I can effectively treat the symptoms.

The Gabapentin helps - but its not a cure all. I still have pain, but it is manageable, most of the time. Whereas before I began taking it - the pain wasn't manageable *ever*.

I do hope the new meds help you out. I wish you the best of luck.

*hug* "

" Unless u are taking a controlled narcotic, I don't find it necessary for a urine test. Sounds fishy... "

" Thanks all! Ouchy, the reason he does the drug tests...he won't treat patients that are doing illegal drugs. He said you would be surprised how many people with chronic pain use illegal drugs to cope with pain and he said, he simply won't treat them if they choose to get "help" in that way. I have heard from several others today that quite a few pain specialists drug test their patients at every visit for the same reason. I don't have a problem with it at all. I guess if I did I would just go somewhere else but so far I really like him. Thanks for your concern though! "
