Nuerontin-WHY

I have been going through hell these past few days, I stopped by Neurontin that I was taking daily at 1800 MG, I expected it to be bad but not this bad!! Ive been compensating by taking 8 Tramadol and 4 vicodin, which has been the bare minimum for sustaining my sanity, but the psychological side effects have been astonishing. My cognition and thinking has cleared up and speed up rapidly, I suddenly felt like trying to go back into pre-med, my social anxiety has increased dramatically and I have stopped visiting people, I have been getting excited for the first time about moving but also going through fits of depression. The worst has been the hypersensitivity, I wake up in the morning and if I feel an itch it feels like someone is scratching me hard with something, and I have been insanely itchy, so thats been miserable. But yeah, I can't believe this drug made so many changes in my life, and so much more for the negative rather than the positive, I am so angered that my doctors put me on this medication. I always wondered why I suddenly lost my drive to read and study medicine and science and why I felt like hanging out with my friends all the time, and I would always say really insensitive and uninhibited statements like I was drunk all the time or something, and now I have so many barriers and reservations its weird, its been a challenge and that frightens me- and since it is a GABA analogue, meaning it works on those receptors, it works on the receptors that react to alcohol or benzodiazepines, so that would explain the increased anxiety I guess.
I had a question, when will these withdrawals end, Im on day 5 I think, and its taking a lot longer than I thought. I have been taking the drug consistently for like 7-8 months I think, probably longer. Also, my memory and ability to learn has improved, which has been so relieving, and I realized the neurontin was doing barely anything for the pain but just made me care less about the pain but also made me care about everything less in my life, I stopped caring about school and all this stuff that used to be important to me and now Im free but also miserable its weird. I think nobody should take this or lyrica, its changes you, I have been so mad that my personality has become so laid-back when I am a natural neurotic, and now I remember the doctor saying that this changes the way you feel pain rather than saying it changes the pain. Nobody take this drug or lyrica. I would rather be on hardcore opiates rather than that crap, and the withdrawals are taking way tooooo long. Posted on 07/05/09, 11:07 am |

See here's the problem we're having - you just stopped taking it - against medical advice, and didn't even ask if you should taper it off. I don't know, with all the crap you're taking, how you can know that what you're feeling is "withdrawal" from neurontin, which should NOT be in your system anymore, as it metabolizes quickly, or whether it's side effects from the chemical stew you continue to feed yourself.
Did you even tell the doctor what you were doing? Does he know about the other meds you're taking?

I take the maximum dose of 3600 mg a day along with 6 tramadol spread thoughout the day of course. The Tramadol stopped working for me, the two combined work GREAT! It might make me tired, but I think that's the fibro. I would never go off it without a dr's order and plan. I have no reason to go off it since it works so well for my pain. I've been on it for at least two years now. I have to take 3600 because the smaller doses didn't do anything for me. Apparently, this is not uncommon. People aren't being prescribed enough of certain drugs, and give up too quickly. I'm glad I didn't give up on this med. I just wanted to add this since my experience is much different and want to encourage those who might be willing to try if nothing else is working for them. Everyone is different. I study and read all of the time on this med.

Oh I think I am good now, but it still takes time for you to go through a withdrawal on any medicine. More receptors are created in your CNS and Brain to compensate for the influx of additional neurotransmitters, I aced Biopsychology so I know how it works. The receptors go off like crazy when the chemical is reduced, which is the reason why quitting smoking is so hard, the receptors for nicotine are exactly like the receptors for acetylcholine (which results in shakes and agitation). It doesnt matter how fast the meds leave your, it matters how long it takes for your brain to adjust without the chemical no longer circulating in your system, plus I was on a really high dose, so Im pretty sure it will take me a lot longer than usual to return completely back to normal. This idea is kind of a paradox in some ways, because scientists debate whether depression is caused by too many receptors of serotonin or too little serotonin, but either way it results an imbalance that causes a lot of problems. Right now Im just trying to figure out how to stop taking Tramadol while starting to take Savella (luckily my insurance covered it, Im pretty surprised). I don't want to do bad in school with all these pain meds so Im really banking on it to work. My doc says I can take Ultram and Savella, but I really don't trust his judgement because theres a potentially fatal reaction called Serotonin syndrome or neuroleptic malignant syndrome I believe from too much Serotonin, so Im just confused. I think I might increase my vicodin temporarily, stop the Tramadol, and start the Savella in another week or so. Well anyways, best to all of you.

Just as a little info Neurontin and Gabapentin are the exact same drug. They're listed in the PDR for different purposes under the respective names, but they are identical chemically.
