Nuerontin-WHY

I have been going through hell these past few days, I stopped by Neurontin that I was taking daily at 1800 MG, I expected it to be bad but not this bad!! Ive been compensating by taking 8 Tramadol and 4 vicodin, which has been the bare minimum for sustaining my sanity, but the psychological side effects have been astonishing. My cognition and thinking has cleared up and speed up rapidly, I suddenly felt like trying to go back into pre-med, my social anxiety has increased dramatically and I have stopped visiting people, I have been getting excited for the first time about moving but also going through fits of depression. The worst has been the hypersensitivity, I wake up in the morning and if I feel an itch it feels like someone is scratching me hard with something, and I have been insanely itchy, so thats been miserable. But yeah, I can't believe this drug made so many changes in my life, and so much more for the negative rather than the positive, I am so angered that my doctors put me on this medication. I always wondered why I suddenly lost my drive to read and study medicine and science and why I felt like hanging out with my friends all the time, and I would always say really insensitive and uninhibited statements like I was drunk all the time or something, and now I have so many barriers and reservations its weird, its been a challenge and that frightens me- and since it is a GABA analogue, meaning it works on those receptors, it works on the receptors that react to alcohol or benzodiazepines, so that would explain the increased anxiety I guess.
I had a question, when will these withdrawals end, Im on day 5 I think, and its taking a lot longer than I thought. I have been taking the drug consistently for like 7-8 months I think, probably longer. Also, my memory and ability to learn has improved, which has been so relieving, and I realized the neurontin was doing barely anything for the pain but just made me care less about the pain but also made me care about everything less in my life, I stopped caring about school and all this stuff that used to be important to me and now Im free but also miserable its weird. I think nobody should take this or lyrica, its changes you, I have been so mad that my personality has become so laid-back when I am a natural neurotic, and now I remember the doctor saying that this changes the way you feel pain rather than saying it changes the pain. Nobody take this drug or lyrica. I would rather be on hardcore opiates rather than that crap, and the withdrawals are taking way tooooo long. Posted on 07/05/09, 11:07 am |

I took it a while back and it negatively affected my mood too. I dropped it. BUT, if you have been on it for any length of time longer than a few days, I would defintely WEAN OFF. I am currently re-weaning off of Cymbalta. That stuff was crap. I was so messed up from the first weaning, that I had to do another approach from weaning. LOL.
Water, vitamins, stretching and hot baths to try to alleviate SOME of the pain. HUGS JBEAN

This is all so scary, please take care.
This is why I decided to not even try Lyrica. Gentle hugs to you, Sherrall

crap Ive been having a feeling all day like im about to seize, my muscles are all really tense and locked up and shaking a lot, and my breathing is irregular and I just feel like im on the verge of a seizure, but I haven't really had a full blown one before, but a few of my limbs have been having spasms today so Im worried. I feel like my muscles are just on the threshold of completely losing it, I don't know what to do, I am pretty concerned.

Oh yeah I asked my PCP to write me a script of Savella or whatever that stuff was, he hadn't even heard of it and I had to tell him what it was off the top of my head- it's a SNRI and SSRI in one right? But he wants me to stack it on top of 8 tramadol a day, and common sense dictates that I will have a huge seizure especially while going through withdrawals. The only reason I asked for this stuff was so that I didn't look like such a narcotic fiend, and he was way nicer to me after I brought up the Savella for some reason, but I am going to start reducing the tramadol next week or so after the neurontin withdrawals subside. I doubt the Savella will work though because the tramadol is basically the same thing, but it has a weak opiate effect and I don't want to be on any pain meds when I start school next fall. Hopefully I can just increase my vicodin for a while and start the Savella- but one big problem with that is that there is no generic for savella, and I am definitely not paying for brand name prices when Cymbalta is available, so hopefully my insurance will cover it. I wish you all good luck with your meds and Savella, I got the idea from you guys so Im trusting you people. Best wishes.

Are you taking a muscle relaxer at all? Stop the pain before it starts and you won't need so much vicodin or tramadol - both of which can cause hallucinations after long term use.
I know this because I've conversed with hummingbirds... I took Neurontin for awhile but didn't have this kind of trouble quitting, but I sure did the Lyrica. With that, I had muscle spasms that caused unbearable pain. Soma really helped to relieve the tenseness before the spasms could even get going.

There has to be more info someone can give me on this, I am still feeling like crap. I can't believe that doctor pressured me to go up to 2400 mg, like 1800 wasn't already bad enough, but apparently this barely gets metabolized by your body so thats why, but still its such a disgusting medication. Has anyone gone through these withdrawals from Gabapentin specifically after about 8 months or more of use? Especially at that high of a dose?

i feel very concerned for you! did you say dr.was aware of withdrawal symptoms-if not should be-if he is he should be doing something to help you, seizures can be life threatening. i have heard of people detoxing from illegal or prescription drugs like vicodin or xanax that didn't have the same intensity of symptoms after 5 days that you are experiencing. i have only been on low dosage fentanyl(no reason to stop at this time)and xanax and have been without xanax for days and have only had anxiety(not sure that was from withdrawal),so i personally have no experience with this but am extremely surprised and concerned that the withdrawal symptoms from drugs that drs. seem so ready to prescribe(rather than pain meds)have such horrible withdrawal effects.i will definitely be thinking of you and hope you keep posting on this because i am concerned for you. gentle, gentle hugs, noreen

Your doctor can put you in the hospital to detox from these meds. I would do that before starting the savella. Also I would try the savella before the cymbalta. I did the cymbalta it didn't do any thing for me and I've heard alot of horror stories about it. Please becareful. My mom had grandmall sieures and they can be very dangerous. I hope your not driving if your feeling like this. It sounds like your on the right track. These meds can mess us up without us even realizing it. I been there and can tell you some horror stories so now I'm more carefull.
Sending Hugs and Prayers that things get better soon and Good Luck in school.

Neorontin is a safe drug. The medication only lasts three days in your system after stopping. Now on the other hand, Lyrica takes a while to leave your system. I had a horrible reaction to Lyrica, but not with Neorontin. You should NEVER go "Cold Turkey" on any medications, or compensate with any other medications. You need to get yourself in to see your doctor, or change doctors for your own wellness. I hope you get the help that you need.
