Nuerontin-WHY

I have been going through hell these past few days, I stopped by Neurontin that I was taking daily at 1800 MG, I expected it to be bad but not this bad!! Ive been compensating by taking 8 Tramadol and 4 vicodin, which has been the bare minimum for sustaining my sanity, but the psychological side effects have been astonishing. My cognition and thinking has cleared up and speed up rapidly, I suddenly felt like trying to go back into pre-med, my social anxiety has increased dramatically and I have stopped visiting people, I have been getting excited for the first time about moving but also going through fits of depression. The worst has been the hypersensitivity, I wake up in the morning and if I feel an itch it feels like someone is scratching me hard with something, and I have been insanely itchy, so thats been miserable. But yeah, I can't believe this drug made so many changes in my life, and so much more for the negative rather than the positive, I am so angered that my doctors put me on this medication. I always wondered why I suddenly lost my drive to read and study medicine and science and why I felt like hanging out with my friends all the time, and I would always say really insensitive and uninhibited statements like I was drunk all the time or something, and now I have so many barriers and reservations its weird, its been a challenge and that frightens me- and since it is a GABA analogue, meaning it works on those receptors, it works on the receptors that react to alcohol or benzodiazepines, so that would explain the increased anxiety I guess.
I had a question, when will these withdrawals end, Im on day 5 I think, and its taking a lot longer than I thought. I have been taking the drug consistently for like 7-8 months I think, probably longer. Also, my memory and ability to learn has improved, which has been so relieving, and I realized the neurontin was doing barely anything for the pain but just made me care less about the pain but also made me care about everything less in my life, I stopped caring about school and all this stuff that used to be important to me and now Im free but also miserable its weird. I think nobody should take this or lyrica, its changes you, I have been so mad that my personality has become so laid-back when I am a natural neurotic, and now I remember the doctor saying that this changes the way you feel pain rather than saying it changes the pain. Nobody take this drug or lyrica. I would rather be on hardcore opiates rather than that crap, and the withdrawals are taking way tooooo long.

" Join the club. Sorry hun. You just have to push through. It WILL end.

There are foods that can help you detox. Get some.

http://food.yahoo.com/blog/beautye...

Drink plenty of water.

My Lyrica withdrawal put me in bed for two solid weeks and it was pure out-of-my-head misery for 6 of those days. Another week of fidgets and I don't think the effects fully wore off for another two months.

I wish I'd known about the detox foods then. I'm quitting Topamax right now and I think the foods are helping a lot - some depression but not as bad as the Lyrica.

I feel your anger. I'm so steamed at Pfizer for getting me hooked on Lyrica with their free samples. The stuff is poison.

Hang in there. "

" I agree with you-except that when I first started Neurontin, I thought it was great stuff. The side effects were accumulating slowly and I became so fuzzy and unsure of myself-but I didn't realize how much it
had done to me until I came off of it.

Lyrica just stopped working after about 9 mos. Just stopped. Then I went on Cymbalt-worse than all of them. Now Savella, which I am feeling positive about-time will tell.

I'm sure the pharms know how desperate we all are to feel "normal" and pain free. What I don't get is how often the side effects are just like what we're taking the meds to get rid of-or worse!
Blessings,
Angel "

" I guess I was lucky the side effects were so bad when I first started that I had to stop after two days. Sorry you had to go through this.

Sending Hugs and Prayers that you feel better soon. "

" did you come off it slowly cutting down. If you stopped cold turkey that could be dangerous. "

" I think I had a mini seizure though, my arms were shaking a ton and I felt shaky and dizzy, I was afraid it might happen because of the cold turkey method, but I am never ever picking up a new script of that again. I just want these to end, I want to take more vicodin dammit, my pain doctor puts me on too strict of an allowance, but my primary care physian prescribed me way more meds and actually seemd to care about my pain. I called my pain doctor so many times to ask her to change my dosages but she always said she didn't feel comfortable doing it over the phone, so if I could wait two weeks then I could change my meds for the severe pain im suffering at the moment. I think I am going to drop my pain doctor and stick with my g.p. if I can, she is such a b word "

" I came off the Lyrica slowly. I'm doing the same with Topamax. Since you've gone cold turkey, oh brave youth, your withdrawal period shouldn't last much longer. Hopefully you're seeing the worst.

Because Neurontin was originally developed for epilepsy, I don't think it's unusual that you would have a seizure with the withdrawal. That's pretty common with this class of meds. I like your resolve, but if it happens again, you might need to take a lower dose and taper off. "

" What can I say that you have not already heard, except be thankful for this forum, when the Dr. put me on Neurontin it was only about 5 days before my husband said to me they should call the stuff you are on "U ROTTEN" as my personality went bonkers, I became a real *itch to him and our daughter...that being said I quit taking it right away, unfortunately my Pain Dr is not a good one and I am in search of a new one, after lettting him cut nerves in my back twice (rhizotomies), and 3 Epidurals which he thought would manage my pain (obviously he does not know what the hell he is doing) I am streatching out my curent medications which is not going so well, however back to you, take it easy, listen to the experienced folks in this forum and believe you will get better soon... " Sorry for the misery, and not to add insult to injury.... it is probably a sensitivity to the vicodin that is making you so itchy, it does the same to me. :( But I have been through withdrawals on SO many meds, I think the topomax was the worst. Lyrica sucked too. It DOES get better, the fog will clear a little and hopefully you will feel better. I am now just taking tramadol and cyclobenzaprine. Still a little more tired than I would like due to the muscle relaxers but better than being as stiff as a board. I hope you feel better soon!! "

" So let me get this straight - you STOPPED taking a drug your doctor actually prescribed, but you continue to take all that other crap still.

And...you are compensating for a seizure-inhibiting drug with large amounts of a drug with seizure side effects - I don't doubt that you had a seizure and I'm surprised it was "mini."

Shawn you have GOT to get yourself evaulated before you actually kill yourself. "
