dr.'s and pain meds

I had my appt. yesterday. I suffer from serious hemiplegic migraines (I have since I was 13 yrs old). I do have a migraine pain reliever - it's a mix of aspirin, butal, caffeine, and codeine ( I think they also call it fiornal or fiorecet). During a flare I get painful headaches that I just can't get past. Especially if I get too hot or there's a weird weather change. The pain med that I have, I consider to be pretty mild, and doesn't do a thing. Not to mention that I have such bad leg pains at night I can barely sleep. Anyhow, I asked about a pain killer and the dr. a rheumatologist, said he doesn't give out pain killers and said some other dr.'s do - but generally theyd refer you to a pain management guy. But, he said the Savella would help. I have a a good codeine from my OB after giving birth 2 yrs ago. I hate to self medicate but I had about 15 pills left, and have taken 5 of them over the last 8 wks. I'm sure it's a weaker codine prescrip - it's not too strong, but it does help w/ the bad headaches and pains. I've only taken them when I was in bad shape. I know I shouldn't be taking a scrip that's over 2 yrs old either! Why can't I have a stronger pain to help me through the really bad pain so I don't have to go to the er?? And by the way, the ER will rarely give me pain meds for a migraine. When I was in college the headahces were crushing - the college staff would demand to take me to the Er just to be surprised that they turned me away b/c it was only a headache - yet I was too sick to speak, walk or even sign my name!!! Do any of you have pain meds????????? How did you get them??? I would be fine with a scrip of 5 pills just a few times a year. You can't get addicted on such a small amount. And a few years ago when I saw anothe rrheumatoloist we wouldn't give me anything either and made me go to a pain clinic -- and they do injections, etc, but don't give pain meds and it's the same clinic that my new rheum. would refer me to. The only plan I had was to possibly ask my neurologist for something stronger - which he might do - I'm not sure - I've never asked for anything stronger. What do you think???Am I crazy for wanting a few pills of something stronger for the days and nights I have to have a little extra help -- and again, I'm talking about an average of 2 pills a month of something that's only a little stronger than tylenol!!!!

" definitely ask, ask, and keep asking! theres no reason for anyone to suffer needlessly and shame on the drs. that think so. unfortunately there are too many people who abuse pain killers that make it difficult for those of us who receive great benefits from pain meds. also pain is not healthy and does create stress on the body. i hope you get some relief soon! hugs, noreen "

" Oh by the way, the pain killer that I have been using from my last childbirth is Oxycodone/Apap 5-325. If I understand correctly that means it's 5 grams of codeine, 325 acetimin. And I think it's basically percocet. Is that too strong - can you get that from a dr. for a pian condition or is it pretty strong?? "

" Oxycodone is fast-acting Oxycontin (oxycontin is time-released). I agree that you should get a new doctor. Any doctor who will let a patient suffer needlessly should lose his license to practice medicine.

Percocet is a strong med - they gave it to my husband after gastric bypass surgery - where they basically rearrange all your plumbing - and it knocked him right out :) Funny though it didnt help my fibro pain. I have hydrocodone (vicodin) for flares but my doctor is getting nervous about that and he and I are going to have to have a serious talk - the kind where I ask him WTF...I'm sixty and I have no history of substance abuse and the statistical chance I'm going to develop an addictive personality now is probably actually in the negative numbers.

For what it's worth, if you have no history of substance abuse, there is NO good reason not to give you any pain med you need. At your age, you're not going to suddenly become addicted to a medication you've taken responsibly for this long, or to any other for that matter. This isn't my opinion - it's science backed by research and if your doctor doesn't know about the research, then that's another strike against him.

Ask him again - then find another doctor if you can't get his help. "

" I'm in the same boat with you. I'm going in for a follow up this month, and if the doc won't give me pain meds this time, I'm going to ask for a referral to a pain specialist. Years ago people suffered because they had no choice. For them to have the option to treat us now and yet withhold it seems like nothing more than abuse.

As an aside, your neurologist probably shouldn't have a problem giving you a standard migraine med unless you're already on something that would interact with it. Most of the ones like Imitrex, Maxalt, Frova and Relpax aren't habit forming (whereas Fioricet can be). But if you're looking for something that will help with fibro pain, that's where it seems like we run into problems. "

" I would suggest finding a good doctor who understands your condition - I always hesitant about the strong meds - but it is about QUALITY of Life - over anything else! I currectly take Oxycodone 30 mg for my pain - and have been taking it for awhile - but just always have to put myself in check and make sure I am not becoming dependent. Find a good doctor - you don't want to take too much of the percocet because of the acetiminophine - too much can be harmful to your system.

Hope this helps and good luck! "

" My doctor is pretty good about helping with my pain...my rheumy too. My second visit to him, I had a really awful headache that was affecting my neck and shoulders and he gave me a script for tramadol. I had lortab from my wisdom teeth and told my primary about it and she gave me a script for that, albeit a weak dose. But now I understand that she didn't want me to build up a resistance too quickly. Now my psychiatrist (I have a team I guess) has me on gabapentin...and that's supposed to help with nerve pain...so I guess we shall see.

I'd recommend a new doctor.... "

" I am fortunate in that area, but I think it's because I've been with my PCP for over 10 yrs. now and she knows that I will take the pain meds if I am beyond any other means. While I do understand that you need to find a new doc if this one isn't helping you, docs are becoming increasingly paranoid about patients that seem to be doctor shopping, especially in terms of pain killers.

I hope you find a good one and can stay with him/her. I also wouldn't rule out Nurse practitioners-as primary care-

Good luck-
Angel "

" Percocet is extremely strong and I would be hesitant as a doctor to prescribe it. It is not a drug I would want to take on a regular basis. I had it once after a surgery and I swear it was so strong I had an out-of-body experience. I told them NEVER to give that to me again. Maybe I am sensitive to drugs.

I have not been in the type of pain that you are explaining. It could be possible that the more pain you are in the less these drugs affect you. I wish you relief and a good doctor that will help you but monitor and control the amount you are taking and the strength as well to prevent addition possibilities.

Good luck to you and prayers are with you as well. "
