Today I was diagnosed with Leukopenia which basically means that my body is now attacking my white blood cells. After some research my doctor said there has been recent research that has found that Ultram can thin your blood and lower your white blood count. He also found that the notion that Ultram in non-addictive is false. I found several articles that have people's experiences with the withdrawl symptoms. It's a little scary. I'm going to try to get off of it soon. I'm really disappointed because it is the only pain med that has worked for me. I really hope that going off of this will help the Leukopenia... at its worse you have to have a bone marrow transplant and that is something I really really really don't want to have to endure.

If your on Ultram i'd really recommend you do some research and talk to your doctor. I would hate for anyone on here to develop any problems from this. For so long they have told us it is harmless and non-addictive its sad that after so many of us depend on it they finally tell us its not the miracle they once claimed.

" Tramadol is also an NSAID. If you have high blood pressure, NSAIDs can raise it. Mine was out of control until I stopped.

Bone marrow transplant? Yikes!

These newer drugs beg the questions - Are they trying to kill us? Are we not committing suicide fast enough?

I'm going to try willow bark compresses. I'm fed up with pharmers. "

" Tramadol is just the generic name of Ultram. It is marketed under many brand names. It is a CNS depressant and analgesic. It is neither a NSAID nor narcotic, although it is "narcotic-like" in it's effectivenss at managing pain. The Pharmacist informed me that although it isn't technically a narcotic, she expected it to one day be re-classified as a controlled substance. Probably because of the very thing you were writing about Ozarksgirl.

I am allergic to it, which is a pity. Some of my doctors that won't prescribe pain meds like Lortab are willing to prescribe Ultram. One doctor wrote me a script for 8 ultram per day, whereas he was very much opposed to giving me Lortab. It is an effective drug and greatly helped my pain, but it caused such severe itching, one tablet would keep me awake for 2 days. I would claw my skin because it felt like bugs were under my flesh. Horrible, it was! "

" Ultram is an older drug. When I was first given an rx for it my doctor was shocked that it worked like a magic pill for me. all other rx's did nothing to help with the pain. For me I can take 1 or 2 at at a time but never more then 4 in one day. I can not take 2 at a time I will itch like crazy if I do. so if I need 2 I wait 2 hours before taking another one. I did all the research too, I thought about the pros and cons. But for me it helps with the pain. thanks for the post. "

" I started to take ultram when it first came on the market. Doc told me that it was not addictive, could be taken for a long time and would help with the pain. Long story short, I was quickly up to 8 per day, sometimes more. My pain came back so I told the doc. Unwilling to prescribe any controlled drugs like lortab etc... I figured, well it's not helping so I'll just go off of it. Within a day my body felt like crap. Worse than crap! Had horrible mood swings, hot and cold spells(more like cooking and freezing) could not sleep bones, muscles and head pounded with pain, throwing up.....AWFUL!!!!!!!! Called the doc finally and he precsribed 30 mor for me to wean off with. As soon as I took the first dose all symptoms went away. NON ADDICTIVE???? Don't think so.... "

" Yeah Ultram is an older drug and I liken the withdrawal to opiates! I RAN OUT once over winter break and I had cold sweats for days and I felt like total crap -- it was horrible. I take the Extended Release kind and this is one of the only drugs my spouse considers to be SAFE for me to take because he did research on it and because it's been around so long. Blah I'm ready to just give up all of my stupid pills I am so tired of it. Of course, we go see the doc and they want to INCREASE stuff because my feet hurt so bad!! Why does everything require a pill?! "

" I had to go look it up...cause I got confused with the conflicting replies...it IS habit forming, will cause withdrawls, it should not be taken with ADs, AAs, Muscle relaxors {sedatives}...or with other narcotics...alcohol...Can cause Seizures...Yikes !!

I Never rely anymore on what a Dr. tells me about a Drug...I first read the insert, if I have anything unusual going on once starting I Always talk to the Pharmacist..Dr.s don't know enuff about the specifics of each Drug they prescribe...

Hugs to ya Girl, and Thanx for bringing this to Peoples Attention... "

" Sorry you are having to Deal with this.

I looked it up and there are a number of meds that can cause this welbutrine (antidepressant also use to help people stop smoking) is listed there. There are probably a lot more because once they are on the market not all the new side effects they find get reported.

Taking any med long term carries a risk we just have to educate ourselves and decide if the risk is worth the benifit. Also a good reason to have blood test on a regular bases to catch problems early.

Sending Hugs and Prayers that they caught it early and you won't need a bone marrow transplant.

If you have someone it would be a good idea to have them go to doctors appointments with you a second set of ears can be helpful. If not you might want to ask the doctor treating you for this if you can bring a tape recorder. "
