Is anybody here on darvocet? It's one of my mild breakthrough pain meds.

Anyway, I just heard on the news tonight that the FDA wants to get rid of it pretty much just because it's old. It's been out for over 50 years now. They also said that it didn't give strong pain relief and then gave the usual crap about overdose and suicide.

I'm thinking if it was that bad they could have canned it years ago. Besides that, not being super strong pain relief can be a good thing.

I'm on the fentanyl patch full time to start off with. Darvocet is for when the aches start to get, well achey. Then percocet is for when they get really bad. If it goes beyond that it's off to the doctor I go.

I can make a 1 month rx of both pills last over 3 months. If the darvocet goes away I'm stuck with percocet for even the mild pain. Now tell me again about chance of overdose? It just seems like twisted logic to me.

So, anyone else on darvocet, or have any thoughts or opinions on this?

" My sister took darvocet years ago and ended up in a mental hospital where they continued the darvocet even though the reasons for it were over. As soon as her doctor took her off the drug, she was back to normal.

Of course she carries the stigma from the experience.

I've found almost complete relief with Tramadol and Boswellia Serrata (a relative of Frankensinse.) "

" I agree it is some strange logic. I know that many people take Darvocet and my guess would be (my pessimism is showing) there is not enough money being made from it anymore.
I myself cannot take that or anything like it because it really just messes up my head and does nothing for pain. "

" My Rheumy just started me on it and it is a total waste! Doesn't work at all! As a matter of fact, my fam doc used to give it to me for my menstrual cramps...lol

So best believe I tried it for 6 weeks like she wanted but we are definitely getting rid of this one.... I would do just as well with Ibuprofen 800..... I want to ask about the patch.

I am sick of having to take pills every 4 hours for pain... give me something that provides long term relief.... please!

If you are sensitive to meds though.... my friend takes darvocet for her side pain (she had part of her kidney and a rib removed) that she has constantly since the surgery from nerve damage.
She likes it because it doesn't really make her tired and not near the side effects like stronger meds.... "

" I think the reason they want to get rid of it is money. How well it works is probably base on what strength you get and how your body reacts to it. I liked it as a change from vicoden because vicoden are like horse pill where the darvocet are little tiny pills.

I've always had to change meds alot because I build up a tolerance to them really fast.

I just resently added an anti-inflamitory Nabumetone to my pain meds and I've been doing pretty good with that and flexeral so I've been able to cut way back on the vicoden.

Hugs "

" What a joke!!!

Well, geez, if they are gonna get rid of Darvocet....then lets throw in Penicillin too.....they are just as old. And they don't work as good as Z-pak (Azithromyacin). "

" As always, everyone is different and we don't all react the same ways to the same meds. I just don't see the logic of getting rid of it because it's old. I mean, morphine has been around for a couple hundred years (if not longer) and that's still around and it's possible side effects are even heavier.

Wonderbaby, I like your thinking about tossing penicillin too if we're going this route. It's a heck of a lot older. As old as mold on bread actually, and there are a heck of a lot more people allergic to it.

Darvocet isn't near as strong to me as it used to be. Once upon a time that was my strong pain relief. At the same time though I'm not looking forward to a change in a rx routine that actually works for me because the darvocet gives me just enough (not too much) to help add to what's already in my system to get those mild aches without having to take anything stronger. Of course I don't rely only on pain meds. They've got me on a ton of other stuff for various ailments.

Unduki, I can't imagine a mental hospital continuing a patient on darvocet. From what I knew I thought they took people off of everything and started them from scratch when going into a mental facility. That's disturbing. I'm glad to know that her regular dr took care of it.

Akr965 and Maryca, I see your point about the money. Of course the pharmaceutical companies make a lot more off of the newer drugs. Considering it's one of the top 25 most prescribed meds though, I dunno, it can't exactly be putting them in the poor house.

Msbook, I'd be careful about asking for specific meds when seeing the doc if I were you. Chances are they'll try to peg you as a drug seeker. Besides, there are a lot of more effective treatment options between darvocet and the patch. The patch is some really heavy duty stuff not to be taken lightly.

Similar advice for you robinshay. Just tell the doctor that it's not helping and ask what else he/she can do to help. Most likely they will try something stronger. From my experience though they like to think they know it all even though it's our bodies, so sometimes it helps to play a little... not dumb, just not 100% informed.

I've been very fortunate to have a doctor who I can discuss things straight out with. They are few and far between.

*sighs* I've been a guinea pig for way too long. I'm sure you all know the feeling. "
