" that really really sucks.. I do not take it, but if I were the one taking it - I would be really mad.. why can't people just follow directions and have to abuse the meds? Fibro really takes a toll on us and it seems like we are the one struggling for this.. I hope that you will be okay. I am sorry :(
hugs and love "

" i asked my doctor about this and she said it was not true, and it has been found to be very helpful for FM and is a fraction of the cost of other pain meds. it is oxycontin they talk about but its not likely to happen. "

" Where is your mom getting her information? Why would they choose this one med when the problems are spread across pretty much all of them? Doesn't make sense.

There is NOTHING about this on Google - interested to know where she heard this. "

" I didn't know that they were talking about getting rid of it entirely.

But I DO know that just a few days ago, here in Washington, (the state), a woman put her methadone in her purse instead of the usual locked box she puts it in. She woke up to find that her baby had gotten out of the crib and drank the whole bottle and was, of course, dead. Oddly enough, a neighbor told me that this very thing had happened to a friend of his just a couple months ago.

Point is, if it's true that they wanna get rid of it, that is probably why. But, I can't imagine it actually happening to be honest. What will all the ex heroin addicts do? Seriously. That could have serious socio-political repercussions. So, really, I wouldn't get too upset yet. "

" I looked around the net for info on this too, and found nothing. Like someone else said, why would they target this one med when there are so many out there? I take morphine, and if there ever comes a time to stop taking it, (a cure would be nice) I'll just ease down the dose, until I don't need it. Methadone in't the only treatment option available for people addicted to opiates. There are others, but I didn't find anything to cause alarm. As for the story about the toddler drinking the bottle of it, I'd check snopes urban ledgens on that one. Especially if people heard it as "my friends friend" or "some lady". It's always like that when it's an urban ledgend. Good luck. I hope your pain is managable throughout the Holiday Season! "

" My Mom heard this from her pain management Dr. The Dr might have been misinformed or just didnt want to prescribe it. Thanks for the reassurance. I looked around on the web and did not find anything in question but Oxycontin. Thank to you all. love and GOD's blessings to you.

" Hi

I do not have fibromyalgia--I joined just because I happened to run across your post on a Google News Alert and I wanted to reassure you.

I am a certified methadone advocate, and moderate/administer three websites devoted to methadone treatment--we have both pain patients and methadone maintenance patients. I attend regular conferences regarding methadone treatment and have met with and contacted government officials regarding it's use.

Methadone is NOT being banned. I don't know where your mom heard this but it is not true. There HAS been an increase in methadone related deaths, primarily since it started being prescribed for pain management more frequently in the wake of the Oxycontin scandals a few years ago. Methadone is a unique drug due to it's long half life and the buildup of the drug in the tissues, and not all doctors know how to titrate the dosage safely in new patients who may not already have a strong tolerance. The government is planning additional training for doctors who prescribe opiate drugs like this. It is true that the 40mg wafer was voluntarily withdrawn for use in pain management, as it was never intended for that purpose, and the DEA felt that drug abusers might be less likely to take four 10mg pills or 8 5mg pills than they would be to take one 40mg wafer. However, they are still available to methadone clinics for the treatment of drug addiction.

There ARE groups who seek to ban methadone, just as there are groups who seek to ban other narcotic medications--even tylenol, believe it or not! However, there are NO plans for that right now.

There are, unfortuantely, NOT a lot of other options for those with opiate addiction. There is one other medication, Buprenorphine (Suboxone) but it is not very effective in those with heavier addictions, and works best for those with lighter, short term Rx addictions. There are no other opioid agonist treatments approved for addiction to opiates, and most people who end up on medication assisted treatment are there because abstinence based treatment did not work for them.

Anyhow, I wish you the best of luck and hope you will be able to relax now. Banning methadone is NOT something the government has plans to do right now. "

" I got this info from the fibro network, here is the entire article that I got in an email.
