Ultram... hitory of addiction

I was just given Ultram ER and the nurse didn't say much to me about it. When I looked it up I found that it is pretty much what I was afraid of. I have a big history of addiction that includes narcotic pain killers. I am planning on passing the pills over to someone else so then can just give them to me as prescribed just to be safe on my addiction side of things. Has anyone had a similar situation?

My other question comes in terms of alcohol. I'm not a big drinker by any means, but I do drink on occassion. I know it says not to mix ultram with alcohol, but it says that about most meds anyway. Any thoughts?

One last thing... I will probably be calling my psychiatrist about this anyway, but has anyone had any problems mixing ultram with antidepressants?

Just looking for you guys' comments and thoughts... seems to be a great group here (o:
I'd sure love something to kill this pain, but it's really not worth messing with my mental state. As I sit here typing, I'm fighting back screams, tears, etc... I hurt so much! I know you guys can saddly and unfortunately understand what I'm going through.

" I take Ultram 200mgs and day. I only take it in the morning. I am also on an anti-depressant, but I only take 50mgs at bed time. I have not had a problem with either one of them, sense I don't take them at the same time. I really don't think that either one really helps me. So if it works for you, congrads. Take Care and Gentle Hugs, snowdays "

" Im on tramadol... its the generic of ultram.. works ok for me.. I would imagine I might have some problem going off it ..been on it for 2 yrs now.. but its a low pain med.. it takes the edge off but in flares does nothing.. might want to check with your pharmacist on drug interactions with anitdep.. they would know..
as far as drinking.. not a good idea to mix alchohol with any pain med or antidep.. I used to love a cold beer now and then. but dont drink a drop in 3 yrs now.. not with meds.. no way.. just not a god mixture.. think ultram er is a bit different then tramadol.. good luck hun.. :) "

" Because of your addiction history I would not take the ultra and without consulting your psychiatrist. My son, who is bipolar and takes Paxil, also has a history of addiction. Nobody will prescribe him pain medication along with the Paxil. He also combines Paxil with alcohol and sometimes seroquil. His psychiatrist will no longer give him seroquil. Please be very careful because you may be affected differently than other people are. "

" I took it for a few years. It did help with pain. I did not become addicted to it. I take it now when I am in severe pain and have nothing else to take instead. I do take antidepressants also. If addiction is a problem, then don't take it until you consult a doctor you can really trust. I break the table of Tramadol in half and take just enough to help with the pain. This may be why I did not get addicted to it. Doctors tend to over or under medicate. I am very wary of doctors and their pills now. "

" Ultram/Tramadol has a very low occurrence of addiction, as there is no high or any sort of altered state. It is NOT a narcotic, but acts on the same opioid receptors as narcotics. It ain't gonna do anything but ease your physical pain - if you're lucky. It works great for me, but not for everyone.

It's good that you're concerned, but I expect your physiciatrist will say they're OK.

For what it's worth, which is not that much, I take an occasional drink (never more than two) and I've never had a problem. The issue is CNS depression. Alcohol is a CNS depressant - so are most pain meds. If you were to overdo one or the other or both, you could depress your central nervous system to the point that you might stop breathing - which I've heard is not healthy :) Seriously, that's the issue - so caution is the word, but an occasional beer probably wouldn't be a problem. I'm NOT a doctor - this is just my somewhat knowledgeable opinion combined with my experience.

Please ask your doctor if you're concerned. "

" Ultram ER is a non narcotic pain killer and is not addictive. I take 60mg of Cymbalta at night with it and feel fine. I wouldnt think that Ultram ER would be hard to stop because it takes the pain away yet doesnt make you feel like narcotics do. It gives you no sense of a buzzed feeling or it doesnt me and I take 200 mg daily.

I do believe that Ultram ER has tylenol in it and I would not take it and drink alcohol because this can destroy your liver. You cant mix alcohol and tylenol together. If you call your pharmacist they are generally really cooperative and tell you what they would advise you to do and not to do with meds. Mine is very helpful.

I also had a friend that was on antidepressants and she got drunk and said that she went off and acted crazy but I havent drank since I got sick so I am not sure. Be careful with it all and good luck. "

" Well, I have been on 300 mg of Tramadol (100 3 x a day) for about 3 years now. I am also on a very high dose of generic Prozac, Fluoxentine (60 mg) max is 80. I also drink red wine in the evening while watching tv. I usually drink 2 or 3 glasses. Not every night however. I think my body is so used to the meds that I am on, I don't feel any problems with the combination. That's "me" however. I have been on anti-depressants for several years, and Tramadol for about 4 now. I also take Neurontin 3600 mg. a day. I've been on that for about a year now. The combo of Tramadol and Neurontin has been a Godsend for me for my pain. Of course, during "flares" it just helps a little, but that's not uncommon. Just my experience, and if you have some fear of addiction issues, be careful. I think it would be terrible to not be able to take pain meds because of past addiction. That's why I only use any pain meds for strictly pain only. And only what I am prescribed and what works to help with pain control. "
