Just wanting to know if this medication works for pain? Just got a prescription for it today...I don't use anything for pain except Aleve, but that's not really something that works too well. I'm NOT going on a narcotic, so am hoping this does the trick for me.

Ummm, afraid Tramadol/Ultram IS in the opiate family, according to Medline. In other words, it is a narcotic. But as with any drug that is possibly addicting, the awareness you have that it could be will keep you from over-using it. Take what you need to relieve the pain and keep yourself moving!

I've been taking ultram for about two years. I only take as needed when the pain is excruciating. I can't take over three a day or I feel nauseaous and have a headache. But it really helps to knock the edge off the pain for me. It is a narcotic but I don't see that it's addictive. I also take flexeril early in the afternoon so I can sleep some at night. You can take them together. I hope it works as well for you as it does for me. Prayers to you, Marie77

Thanks for the info. However, according to my doctor and other resources online, Ultram is no yet considered a narcotic. It has some properties that act like Opiates, but the FDA hasn't listed it as a narcotic. Nevertheless, anything like Ultram has the potential of becoming addictive I think. I don't plan to use it on a daily basis, just for those night where the pain makes it impossible to sleep. I have several medication that are known to be addictive, but I don't abuse any of them. I have a pill Phobia...I hate taking them. My fear is always that medication can cause worse things in your body than the reason you are taking them to begin with....

The dr. told me to take a Tylenol with the Ultram and I've been taking it for about 6 months now and it seems to help. But I don't take it really often. Just when I know I'm going to have a really hard day at work or if I'm hurting really bad before I go to bed. In that case I take a Tylenol PM with it and it helps me to sleep. Hope this hels you some.

1) Ultram is a NON opiate that works ON the opiate receptors (Mu receptors)
2) it also inhibits the reuptake of serontonin and norepinephrine (so may also provide pain relief this way) 3) One meta-analysis (review of many studies lumped together) found that ULTRAM IMPROVED FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES AND PAIN IN PATIENTS WITH FIBROMYALGIA...this may be why your doc prescribed it Dr O.

I just recently tried Tramadol. I took the 2 pills, twice a day at first and was sick as a dog. I dropped down to one tablet, and the horrible nausea continued, so badly that I gave up. I tried once more, 1/2 pill but it continued and decided I couldn't take pain, fatigue AND nausea.
The very short time before the nausea hit, the pain was reduced. I'm very disappointed I couldn't tolerate it because it was the last drug available, besides Tylenol-Arthritis, short of a narcotic. Celebrex and Motrin are out for now due to iron deficiency/suspected GI issues.
