Amputation

My pain has increased drastically this year, with every week. I've begun to gain weight, something I've never, ever had trouble with before. I was one of those guys who could eat 20 hamburgers, literally (I have done it once), and gain nothing because of my metabolism and active lifestyle. I never worried about weight, it never became an issue, but now, now the pain is so immense that I can hardly summon the energy to move anymore, and have had to stop exercising or working out. While I don't seem to have lost any strength, I have lost endurance. I get out of breath so easily now and have no energy anymore. It feels such a shame to feel like my obese mother (not insulting her, rather pointing out that I feel like she does at her weight, which is 200lbs over) at only 19. I only weigh 150lbs, so I'm not fat or anything, just starting to slightly gain lovehandles and things, which may someday lead to actual obesity.

Anyways, sorry for the off-topic thing, but it was a lead-up to my question. I have seriously begun to consider amputation, but I wonder about "phantom" limbs. If you do not know what that means, it is when a limb or body part has been lost, but the brain still feels like it's there. I'm worried that if I amputated my leg, I might still feel pain despite that. I've seen people with prosthetics who could run in the olympics. Those are expensive, yes, but I have money coming to me, and my family would support the fee. I think I could actually become more active without legs, or at least without one of them. This way, I could do things with my upper body that require standing, but not wear out so easily because of my leg pain.

Does anyone know of a case where a fibro-sufferer had amputations and how it went?

Please, don't try to sway my decisions, I'm known for my stubbornness, I'm just asking whether you think it would help or not, and if you know detail about "phantom" limbs and sensations.

Thanks in advance, all.

" That is a drastic move, but you have to do what you need to do for yourself. I don't lknow about phantom limbs..sry

Have you talked to a doctor yet? Will they do it?

I wish you the best no matter what your decision is :)

" Why would you feel the need to do this? Please consider trying alternative supplements such as D-Ribose, 5-HTP etc. Once your leg(s) are gone, they are gone forever.

Have you talked to a psychiatrist and doctor about this? It could be your medication talking or a side effect.

Your mom would benefit by taking the 5-HTP and D-Ribose as well, then you two could start out with short walks around the block, leading up to more exercise.

I'm what they consider morbidly obese, had fibro and myofascial pain for 22 years and just NOW begun to feel better and lost about 25lbs over the last 6 weeks. Pain relief and energy CAN be done safely and fairly quickly. Please give it a try before doing something so drastic. Keep talking to us about it too, okay. hugs. "

" I would never try to sway your decision.

However I have to say that even thinking this worries me.

Why would you consider this? If there is a doctor out there that would even think of amputating a limb due to fibro would really suprise me and also worry me as to the reasons why.

If i remember in the past you posting about not having any money to see a doc and no money for meds. I am not questioning you what so ever, however now you are stating tht u have the funds to amputate your legs?

Please speak with your doctor about your thoughts.

Amputating your legs is not going to take your pain or fibro away.

Again, im not trying to be rude here but what you are stating has me worried. "

" Hon I am a medical person and they won't amputate for Fm! Your limb has to be totally damaged due to severe trauma and it is your life goes or limb goes. Diabetics have same problem limb must be bad or you keep it!!! "

" Hi,
I would like to sway your decision, only because I thought about the same thing, although I didn't really think I would have the courage to do it. I did think about it because I wanted a normal like and the leg pain seemed to be the biggest obstical to getting back to normal. I totally understand where you are coming from.
Anyway, I am on a new drug test for fibro, and guess what- it is working. I do not know when I am on the drug and not, but I do know because of the pain/energy level. I will know the results in about 6 weeks. Meaning, they will tell me when I was on and off and they will give me the log of my pain levels (I check in on a hand held devise daily) and then when I am done, they will write a note to my dr. so I can go on this permanently. So there is hope. I tried a lot of the traditional meds and none worked. And the mental side effects were horrific. And I work with high schoolers so I need to be healthy mentally and physically. I am back to work f/t, I have begun to walk, I have started doing small amounts of housework and when I am on the meds, my energy level is back. When I am off, I hurt but I know in 6 weeks, I can go on this med permanetly, with little side effects. If you want info on the med., just send a message.
I am just saying, there are dr's out there trying to help. There is big $$$'s to be made off of us. Don't do something permanent. I know you asked for people not to try to change your mind, but I have felt the eay you have felt. And I even thought about the phantom leg thing too. Just please, think about it. "

" I read this went out of it and walked in the other rooom for moment before I decided to answer this. I have many times wished that I had no feeling from the chest down so I could deal witht he Fibro easier because I wouldn't feel it but youknow thatis when I am in pain and I don't have the medical cocktail that my DR has me set up on because I run outof one or the other first and I have to wait a week or two to get the one I am out of. It isn't a horrid thing to think this it is just the pain is just so horrid yourbrain just is tired and desn't want to deal with it anymore. Your so young and you are were we are at and most of us are older than you so I can't imagine being a teenager having to go through what I have been for a while now and just not knowing what I had. I can't imagine any DR that would put his practice in danger to take your leg just from Fibro. You do need to get back to your DR and let him know what you have been thinking and they need to change your meds, add maybe a med and they need tomake sure thatt here isn't something else in your leg that is causing a bigger issue. " Ohhh...how many times I have thought about Ripping OFF my own damn legs...!!
but...Hon, you would be hard pressed to find a surgeon who would be willing to remove a leg or 2..seriously.

as much as it hurts {AND I KNOW IT HURTS}...you DO Need to move around some..ya know, Not alot...just enuff to get some Blood pumpin good...then restdo some stretches...the pain can get bad...but you can get it to a slightly better level...at least while ur Not Flaring, and it could be with pain as Intense as you are having right now...you are probably in a Flare, and it will pass, the pain level will go back down to a manageable level...and you will ne SO happy you didn't find that surgeon that would take one of ur legs..

Hope u r feeling better Soon !!

Hugs to you this day ! "

" I AHVE JOKED ABOUT A BODY TRANSPLANT. BUT ON TO YOUR QUESTION. THIS IS A VERY DRASTIC THING TO DO AND I LIKE OTHERS HAVE SAID DON'T KNOW OF ANYONE WHO HAS HAD ANYTHING AMPUTATED DUE TO FIBRO. EVEN IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE THOUGHT THROUGH I DON'T KNOW OF AN ETHICAL DOCTOR THAT WOULD DO IT AND I AM PRETTY SURE THAT ANY INSURANCE WOULD NOT COVER THIS. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AMPUTATION BEING AN ELECTIVE PROCEDURE. WHAT MEDS DO YOU TAKE AND DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU TAKE YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK AT OTHER OPTIONS. I KNOW THAT IT IS PAINFUL AND VERY DIFFICULT WITH THE WEIGHT GAIN AND PAIN AND ALL THE STRESS AND EVERYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH FIBRO BUT THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER OPTIONS AVAILABLE OTHER THAN AMPUTATION...I PRAY THAT YOU FIND RELIEF SOON AND WISH YOU MUCH LUCK....HUGS....BECCA "
