Does anyone ever experienced low potassium? I have for the pass 2-3 yrs and my doctor has no clue whats causing it. I have an up coming colonoscopy to make sure there are no polups causing it. My meds are not the cause. They dont know I have been taking potassium pills. I just wonder if anyone else had this problem. Thanks

" Hey Wynow:

I take a potassium supplement every day. I started it because I read it helps lower blood pressure, and I think it helps the fibro alittle bit.

The following website shows some of the causes of low potassium:

" I had my potassium level to plummet when I almost died after the C-section with my second child. I ended up with blood clots and fluid in my lungs a couple of days after surgery. Had heart failure and ended up in ICU for 6 days. Almost left this world at age 27. They pumped so much potassium into me that it would burn the skin and they would have to move the IV site every day. I had to take pill form for about 6 months after going home from the hospital. It can make you feel really weak and tired. Lots of leg cramps also. Good luck finding out the source of your lack of potassium. Hugs, Debbie "

" Stop, stop, stop, I am going to wave a red flag right here.Potassium is one thing you do not want to mess with. Nobody should be taking potassium supplements without their doctors knowledge. The accepted level of pottasium in blood work is 3 - 5, this is a very small window, you get to high above that 5 mark and your in trouble. Any nurse or doctor will tell you do not screw with potassium. There are a lot of meds that people take that can effect potassium, esp. anything having to do with heart, blood pressure and such. For most part a bannana every day, and a potato is okay. Talk with your doctor about your potassium levels, do not try and medicate this yourself. In hospitals they can monitor potassium levels before and after doseages, they also are usually giving fluids too. You really need to be careful with this folks. "

" Mine is usually normal. I had my potassium test just a little low once at the rheumy's office, and they told me to just drink a glass of orange juice every day. I was surprised when they said o.j., I expected bananas. "

" Yes I always come back low too. I have take the liquid at home 30cc every am. Doc thinks it is due to the fact I drink so much fluid a day. Now that I have cut out diet soda and sugar I am hoping it will get better. although I drink a lot lot lot of water now. I am always thirsty and not diabetic ether just thirsty.

" I was diagnosed with hyperaldosteronism which is a malfunction of the adrenal gland which causes your body to hold on to its sodium and release its potassium. I was put on spironolactone and for a short period prescription potassium and this cleared up all my symptoms of muscle pain, headache, dizziness, etc.

Although the normal range for potassium is 3.4-5.0, my doctor has found that middle aged women feel best when their numbers are 4.0-4.5, so even if you are in the normal range, you might have potassium that is low for your body. "

" I have to agree with ReneeAnn's reply... be careful and do not supplement potassium unless advised by your doctor. If potassium is low or high it can create serious problems but need to have this checked by a doctor. My medicine because is a water pill I am on a supplement. But have my potassium checked periodically by the doc to make sure it is in the right range.
When was first put on my water pill thought it was funny that right on the bottle it said recommended to eat a banana a day while taking this medicine ... never seen that before ..

Take care gentle hugs "
