I Was wandering how many people take Elavil and have a nasty side effect from it called GAINING WEIGHT..... I have been taking Elavil for a couple of months and in those two months i have gained 10 pounds, I know it is from the meds because nothing else has changed from my eating habits has anyone one else have this problem?

yep i gained 37 lb which apparently is the average weight gain with this med plus it makes some people crave carbs and sweets.

almost all anti-depressants cause weight gain...I know my cravings for carbs and sweets have increased dramatically...yep, menopause may figure in that, but so many other non-menopausal people site the same thing....I have gained 40 lbs. in the 2 years I have been taking anti-depressants....

I have been taking Elavil for just under one year now and lately, I've been LOSING weight, not gaining! I think it may be partly due to lose of appetite because of pain, and I do watch what I eat. I make sure I keep no tempting snack food in the house. Lots of fat free yogurts with fresh fruit, raw almonds and frequent but small meals keep your metabolism going. I eat constantly. Lean meat, veggies. I won't pass on the cheese, or sour cream, but do make sure that there is also other healthy choices wherever possible. I bake almost every weekend for the boys in my life and indulge in that too, but in moderation. A walk a few times a week for exercise.
Perhaps it may be a temporary side effect of the medication? You said that you have only been on it for a couple of months. I had all the nasty side effects but they disappeared after about Month 6 or 7 (dry mouth, metallic taste). Everyone's reaction is different. Give it a few more months before deciding whether or not this is right for you. Also, discuss adjusting the dosage with your doctor.

I have been taking elavil at night before bed. I also take celexa every morning and between the two of them I have gained about 16 pds in about 3 months. YUCK! I also crave sweets and sugar on them. I am currently being weaned off of the celexa and am being put on wellbrutin. They say that you don't gain weight with that.

Gaining weight, usually due to carb cravings, is a common side effect of Elavil and its generic version Amitriptylin. Try taking Chromium Picolinate, a pretty cheap a supplement you can find almost anywhere where vitamins are sold.

I've been on 10mg of elavil for 1 week so far and it's makin me very drousy. I'm very nervous that it will make me gain weight. How can I prevent gainin weight? Do I have to control what I eat now? I'm used to eating anything I want and don't have a weight issue.
