Hi everyone,
My new PCP of all of 4 months just recently cut me off my anxiety meds (Clonazepam/Klonopin), because he claims it may "mask the underlying issue or cause for my anxiety". Cold turkey, cut off after taking this med for damn near 15 years. I don't run out EVER, only take them when I feel my anxiety starting to ratchet up, but he did it! As far as underlying issue, hmmm lets see a) I have fibromyalgia b) have suffered from anxiety and panic attacks since my twenties c) have just relocated to a whole different country and d) the biggest cause is my husband was just diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (cancer). At the worst, most anxiety filled time of my life this Dr just up and yanks my anti-anxiety meds off me??! I'm literally dumbfounded. I was so impressed by him at first cuz he knew off the top of his head the recommended dosage for Neurontin for fibromites. Since then he's almost caused me to have serotonin syndrome 3x by insisting I take anti-depressants to fix my neurotransmitters, all the while saying the fact I also take 5htp shouldn't cause 'any problems' lol okay nimwit let's fix my neurotransmitters but while your at it possibly put me in a coma or kill me jeesh! He put me on BP meds a month ago becuz my heart rate was a little high, 108, he didn't want me to have a heart attack. BUT it's just fine to take my anxiety meds and let me stress so bad I have one?? I KNOW I need to find a new PCP, but as you all know, that means getting to feel comfortable with another new Dr, the going thru yet another round of blood tests this test that test etc. With all I have to currently deal with I won't have time let alone energy to go thru all that again after ONLY 4 months. Ohhh forgot to mention he recommended I seek psychological counseling for the "underlying issue(s)" rather then just masking them!! Grrrrr so MAD I could spit nails! Thanks for the rant, felt good to get that out and I know you will all get my frustration. (gentle Fibro hugs) Musta Posted on 06/23/12, 03:21 am |

I can feel and understand your frustration. Suggestion..always ask for copies of your blood test and any other labs xrays etc. It makss going to a new doc easier and not as much of starting over. Before u go make a list of your diagnlses and meds etc..makes filling out new patient papers easier than sitting in a waiting room tryjng to rush thru it. I know if sucks to go to new doctors but we have to move along or we are stuck.... i understamd i do. And i used to be against counseling. It might be good to see one though just to deal with the stress of your husbands new diagnosis even. Or... just this knline support group should be good enough.. i love daily strength...gettkng feedback from real people who know what u r going thru is the best! (((Hugs)))

I am sorry to hear you are going through this. Can you not discuss this with him and at least go on a step down program?
I wish you luck

Wow... I'd usually say just discuss it with him but not if he's screwing around with 5htp and anti-depressants - sometimes it's difficult to see how some people got their degrees. It's annoying, but you'd better find a new one!

I agree about asking your dr to have the decency to allow you to slowly wean off that stuff! Withdrawal from anxiety meds is AWFUL! I'm shocked that he/she would even suggest stopping cold turkey! Sounds like you definitely need to find a new dr! Hope you're feeling better soon and get this stuff worked out!

Thanks for your kind replies! As I said I knew you'd all "get it". WhiteDolphin I have a referral for mental health, I know and understand I NEED counselling to help me cope with some of these issues. I am just in SO much pain. We all know when our stress increases so do our pain levels. Just sick n tired of being sick n tired and wonder why does everything in my life have to be a battle? A battle to try and make it thru each day full of pain. A battle to keep up with meals etc. Care for my husband and teenage daughter in the home. Just so very very tired of it all. But I'm glad I have DS and all you kind people. Ty from bottom of my heart for just being here!! (gentle hugs) xoxo

I never understand when they want to screw around with what is working. This kind of crap always sounds like a doctors personal prejudice to me.
You're a woman. You're anxious. Well silly goose just deal with it! I have a friend who I've known since early childhood who has battled anxiety all of her adult life. Her husband died a few years ago and since then she's nearly died herself from not eating because her anxiety took her appetite and made her sick when she tried to eat. My point which I'm not making well is that it's as much a medical condition as your husbands cancer and his withholding treatment is just wrong. Please don't put p with this. You have far too much on your plate as it is. Find someone who respects you and treats all of your medical issues responsibly.

I think you have to go find a new doctor. This guy is irresponsible if he is suggesting that you literally stop taking klonopin cold turkey. That is the problem with many doctors, they don't understand pharmacology. I would suggest that you discuss this situation with your pharmacist. Maybe the pharm can intercede on your behalf. At any rate, get a new doctor and take your blood tests with you as suggested here. You paid for them, they are yours.
Ooo, I'm working myself into a 'state' over this. My doctor is talking about taking some of my meds away, although he at least is giving me plenty of leeway to titrate off them. Still, I am frustrated because the meds are working for me. Why not leave it alone? I'm not taking anything really strong, yet he quotes research to me that clearly states that more research is needed, some folks don't react the same way, etc. Oh boy, I really have myself going here.

I had to log in when saw this because I've been on Klonopin for 20 yrs. you absolutely cannot cold turkey off this med. you could have a seizure, die, or suffer from w/d syndrome that could last 2 years!
Go to the emergency room and explain what happened and take your bottle with you so they know your not "seeking" they must treat you and give you more, it is that serious. You can go to a number of the forums for benzo withdrawl like benzobuddies, there are several. Severe Klonopin w/d might not start for 2 weeks. Please go to the ER

Hi iggy,
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I dunno it's been 5 weeks so far and the only real w/d symptom I seem to be having is wild mood swings. I'm also menopausal so that's expected LOL I threw out the pill bottle becuz I was so disgusted in his not renewing it! Oh I'm also having alot of insomnia which I read is another w/d symptom. Can you tell me where to find benzobuddies please? I've looked on here and can't find it? I am going to book an appointment for next week and have one final dialogue with him. On his thoughts about Fibro etc. Last visit one of his first questions to me was "Was meds do you need?" Seems like he believes I am a pill seeker which is the farthest thing from the truth. I HATE pharmaceuticals and only take the ones I feel are absolutely necessary. I've been dealing with this for 7 years and tried to do everything holistically (5htp, vitamins, supplements etc) and FINALLY caved about 4-5 years ago about pain meds. I'm just scared the next PCP will be even less understanding than this one :(( Thanks again, Musta
