Everyone talks about stretching, but even the least bit of stretching causes the most awful muscle spasms. Anyone else have this problem? I take flexaril, but only when I really need it.

" I take flexeril 10mgms 3 times a day. The sleepiness it can cause wears of in a few days. It does make 'stretching' possible & stretching is the only form of exercise most fibromites can handle, on dry land anyway. Anyth in a well heated pool is heaven! The real secret of stretching is to start and continue so gently thet you are hardly doing anything. Like only 2 repeats of anyth at first and add dif types ONLY one at a time. Can work up in a few weeks to 6-8 diff stretches and repeat each about 5 times each at any one sesson ( I do/did two sessions a day) before the fractures in my back. Just yesterday, 3 mos post # my MD showed me 2 that I can start again. But will have to start again with only 2 repeats and just once a day at first! Hope that helps someone, as it can and does decrease the spasms and overall weakness/c "

" I totally agree with carolmi. Start slow and only do what you can do SLOWLY. I stretch when I walk by the chair in the hallway. But I am up to 10 reps. At first I only did it 3 times a day. A little at a time is the key. I also goto physical therapy. The massage helps...even though it hasn't been easy. But I keep going because I have talked with a lot of ppl about this and exercise ie stretching does help. It just doesn't happen overnight. I also take flexeril to help with the spasms at a low dose to not make me so sleepy. But when I get a bad spasm I stop and try again later. My spasms haven't been as bad lately though. You do what you think you can. No harm in trying ...that's why I am doing it. Good Luck "

" As a former dancer I found that when I took Flexeril years ago, it made it too easy to stretch too far, it's a muscle relaxant! I had too many other side effects so I had to stop it anyway. Carolmmi is right, less reps and don't go for 'stretch' right away. "

" I take naproxen and that along with my other meds help so much. I do try to exercise about every day as much as I can. "
