Discussion:
weight gain with Lyrica

Today my doctor told me that the weight gain with Lyrica is NOT caused by water retention (edema) but by a metabolic change that originates in the brain! So no matter how many diuretics you take it will not help. You will just keep gaining weight indefinitely.
I have also read that Pfizer has begun new studies concerning Lyrica due to so much negative feedback.
If there are people out there who have NOT had weight gain or other negative side effects I would like to hear about it.
Now what do we do, after such hype and promise of relief?

" I was just about to ask a question "does Lyrica cause weight gain" so I guess this mostly answers that question for me. Because my dr wanted me to try Lyrica but now I am not so sure "

" There has been a lot of discussion on this board about Lyrica in the last little while, if you scroll back you can find it. Doug was doing a survey type thing on it too. Lyrica made me gain weight too, but it did help with the pain. It is a drug you need to start with low dose first and take consistently. It will make you groggy, foggy, buzzed, it takes well over a week for those symptoms to clear. "

" I talked to my dr. yesterday about this and I'm now coming off this medicine due to the weight gain and increased appetite. My mother gained 12 lbs on this product within a month and I doing the same. "

" I just was at the doctor today and asked about Lyrica and weight gain. He stated that it actually increases your appetite in your brain and that is what makes one gain weight.
Has this been everyone's experience? Increased appetite? or gaining weight without increased appetite?
I am curious of what others have experienced. "

" I hate to be this way about it, but I don't think I can handle the weight gain, so I do not want to try it. "

" i started on this 4 days ago and if anything i have lost my appetite. I know it takes a while to settle down to new meds, i am not sure if i like the headaches i seem to get with it and i am having problems switching off at night more than usual, its 1.09am here in the uk and i am normally in bed by now but i just havent been able to switch my brain off for days now,

whether these are symptoms of this med i am not sure, could just be coincidence *srugs*

weight gain wouldnt bother me if i got rid of the pain. i am already over weight, i will manage

i just hope it works "

" I must be in the minority, and my brain must be wired differently, or it maybe it is reacting to the other med's I am on as I am on meds for diabeties, high blood pressure, mtx for ra, and hypothyroidism, so I am not sure. I have lost about 23 lbs, altogether. I am on lycria, and topomax for diabetic neuropathy. (also it helps with my fibromyalgia) I can tell a wonderful help with fibro and neuropathy. Topomax, I know will make you loose weight, but this combination will certainly make you loose weight. I am an insulin dependent diabetic, and I can hardly stand to look at food, even when I am suppose to eat. I have had to cut back on my insulin pump, because I am missing meals. I have an appointment with my dr. to see what is going on this Thurs. I need to see what is going on, as this has been in the last month. "
