Anyone else on Topamax (or as my rx says, Topiramate)? A neurologist put me on them over 6 months ago now for all the migraines while I saw her trying to figure out what was going on with me. (On a side note, I was not a fan of this neurologist. She thought I was 'faking' all the pain I was having in my body and whatnot). Well, now that I know its FM causing all of these lovely issues, I have been thinking about this Topiramate and how I really hate it...
First off, one of the side effects can be weight loss but for me? OH NO....I have put on over 30lbs since taking it!!! It's the only thing that it can be...I was doing Weight Watchers and gaining weight each week. Second, it doesn't seem to prevent headaches like it says it does...but then I wonder, is it preventing some not all? Which is why I am wondering if any one else is on it too and have had any of the same issues or other issues. Any feedback would be great! I bring it up tonight after suffering from an awful migraine yesterday, which just totally put me in a fog today and I could hardly carry my purse my car to the house. Posted on 03/09/11, 06:38 pm |

I'm also on Topamax - 100mg a day
I actually did experience weight loss and it has cut back some of my migraines. I was getting 5 or 6 a week, now I am at 3 or 4. It did cut the intesity of the headache and I can absolutely stop the migraine now when I take the abortive medication. When my neurologist moved up my dosage the side effects were horrendous. More weight loss, I thought I had food poisoning, and my hair started falling out. Needless, to say I went back to the original dosage. It's been a mixed experience. I'm glad that my primary was the original Dr to prescribe the medication. I trust him. I hope you feel better Take care

I also take Topamax and it did wonders for my migraines. I was having several a week and now I only have like maybe one or two a month. I can't tell that it has caused me to lose/gain weight though.

Topomax did stop my migraines but due to the horrible side effects I can only take it for about 10 days in a row then I have to stop.
I take fever few capsules daily to help with migraines and watch very carefully what I eat and drink.

I've been on it for about six months new....50 mg a day. It has worked great for me. I was going to the doc's office or ER about every two months for shots for migraines....Imitrex had stopped working.
Since starting the Topamax, I've only had two migraines. To counter those, the neurologist added Relafen to the Imitrex and it worked like a charm... I read that lots of people LOSE weight with it.....I haven't done that, but I haven't gained any either....no effect on me.... Hope that helps, and HUGS from down south :)

Worst side effects I've ever had was from this drug. My doctor put me on this because of my awful headaches. He said start out by taking 1 pill at night before bed. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking my brain was swelling. I've never had a headache so bad in my life. My husband had to take me to the ER. When I got home I tossed them and went back to amitriplyline which did make me gain about 25 lbs but it helps me sleep and gets rid of the headaches so I'm just going to have to live with it or live with the pain.
