Methadone

Is anyone using Methadone? One of our doctors who has treated over 10,000 patients has gone from using lots of narcotics, to using Provigil and Methadone. He swears that it is basically "curing" the fibro. I am writing a grant to do the research and see. Can anyone tell me if you use it, and if so, is it working for you??

" Methadone is a very powerful narcotic - I don't knw why your doc would mislead you into thinking it isn't - it is also a very wonderful pain med, but hard to detox from if you ever have to get off of it. Provigil is the newest of amphetamines - my doc loves it, but I won't take it - speed scares me I guess. Strange that he/she thinks these drugs would cure anything, though it will ensure a constant stream of patients in need of more Rx's. (I am the nurse/sceptic - can you tell?) no offense meant at all - just beware. Blessings,Star )O( "

" i started on methodone a month ago, and it has been wounderful.i was perscribed 10mg every 6-8 hours, i started on 5mg to see how i would react. i have to be careful because i baby sit my 10 month old grand daughter. it has worked great. i only have to take it twice a day on most days to control the pain. it doesnt have the ups and downs as say percocet or lortabs. the pain level seams to stay constand not severe one minute then better, then severe. i still feel the sore muscles, tightness in the joint etc. but i can walk again with out the constant feeling of glass/knives in my hips. i have only had to take something for the breakt hru pain twice. i seam to do really good on 5 mg some times i will take 10mg but not often. i dont seam to have any side effects either, other than having alot of energy when i first started it. i hope this helps hugs cindy "

" I see a rheumo that is wonderful to me, but he wont even discuss methadone with me. He just upped my ms contin and told me that if this dose 60 mg every 12 hours, doesnt work hes not sure what else he can give me for my daily pain, but this dose along with my other meds seems to be working. I am not pain free by no means, but i can tolerate my pain most days and function. UNless im in a flare. NOthing works for my flares.
I will be doing a bit more research on the meth and take it in with me. Other than ms contin, methadone is the only other med/drug that seems to work for most here, that are on it or have taken it.
I hope u find lots of info and help with this. "

" Methadone is the drug that is used for treatment of Heroin addicts. They substitute a street drug for a Rx drug. It is a powerful narcotic that is highly addictive. I would never touch it. "

" After the indictments of Anna Nicole Smith's doctors, you can bet a lot of doctors will refuse to prescribe much of anything lest they too end up being investigated if something happens to their patient.

like Sijentas said, I always thought methadone was used for herion addiction.......... "

" If you review the research literature, it states that it is similar to "Darvocet". but, it reduces the excitement of the brain that Heroin causes. A doc seeing over 10,000 for past 10 years on our campus swears by it. He used to use major pain meds. He uses methodone and sometimes Provigil. I am going to write a research trial for it. One drug company is going to support helping me establish a treatment for "Women's Diseases". My primary focus will be fibro. I was curious, and as always, hope it will help me too. Everything works for a few days but then.... love y'all. Jackie "

" yes, methadne is used to assist heroin addicts - it is used differently, as a daily dose, since it goes to the same receptors in the brain. It is a pain medication that is highly effective, and for pain it usually Rx'd every 6-8 hours in much smaller doses. It is a powerful drug, and it is highly addictive - frankly, at this point in my life, I am much less concerned with addiction than I am with pain. I don't care if I ever get off of it - my doc started me on it today, and we had a long talk about it - I was on Fentanyl patches - great stuff at $150/mo to start - I can't afford that so he wrote for Methadone after our convo - the bill? 13.49 for the month. so now I can be a relatively pain free addict who can also eat and buy my family gifts this holiday season! Somebody here said they would never touch it - never say never honey... Blessings, Star )O( "

" I have had FM for over 20 years and have been on every drug known for FM. Methadone is for Herion addicts but is also given to people with horrible FM. I was put on Methadone about 3 years ago. That stuff rocked my world in the sense that the pain was nearly gone. I can't tell you how good Methadone works for FM. In about 2-3 weeks your pain will be gone....

On the bad side of Methadone it made me really crazy. Talk about FM Fog you won't be able to remember 10 minutes ago let alone yesterday. Example - about 2 years ago I took my daughter to a movie about 4 days later I saw the commerical for it and told my 8 year old - WOW we need to go see that movie. She said mom we saw that 4 days ago. I couldn't remember that movie if it hit me in the face. I had to rent it when it came out because I couldn't remember a thing. I rented it and guess what...I was like "I have never seen this movie" well I had I didn't remember one word of it. The other side effects are - acting like your drunk all the time and scaring your family, bad nightmares and I mean nightmares that feel so real they ruin your whole day, the withdrawals are tremendously horrible to say the least. If you get the flu and can't hold anything down forget it your going through the withdrawals.

Just the withdrawals alone are so bad that I wouldn't take it again if you paid me. I want to remember my daughters childhood and the pain I'm in everyday is worth seeing her grow up. I saved some if them in case of an Earthquake or whatever but it will take a major disaster to make me put one of those things in me ever again.

Bottom line - If you don't care about withdrawals (like a herion addict gets) and you don't care if you remember the rest of your life then by all means go for it. Your pain will pretty much be gone and YOU"LL feel human. Just get ready for family and friends to tell you how weird you have gotten...that's my story with the stuff. Drugs do different things to people but this is my experience with it...any quesitons feel free to send a message...V "
