Balance problems

My balance has always been bad but lately it's been awful. I'm afraid to take a shower, yesterday I almost fell twice And I don't even have to have my eyes closed (like when I'm rinsing my hair). The other day I was putting something in the garbage can and just started falling over for no reason. I can't walk around something without running into it, bounce off the walls, etc. I know the fibro has a lot to do with it but it's getting so much worse and it's scaring the hell out of me. I told my therapist about it yesterday and he said he's going to give me some excercises to do to help next time I see him, but I was wondering if anyone elses balance is getting worse and if anyone knows why? (Elavaney do you have any info on this?) Thanks, Kellybean

" i am loosing my balance all the time now..even when i am walking..people think i am drunk..not to mention that i am too weak now to not walk without a cane just to hold myself up and to keep my balance somewhat...i am fixin to have to resort to buying one of those chairs taht fits in the tub/shower. Because i am too weak and loosing my balance too much to stand and shower and i am having a hard time getting out of the bathtub. So yes i understand why that is. I am not an expert but i do believe it is the FM. I think it is from a combo of things the fibrofog, the pain, the weakness, and the fatigue...my body usually passes out when i hit over load..and i loose my balance more when my pain level is through the roof...that is all i can offer..i hope it helps...i will be praying for you..keep us posted!! " Hmmmm, yes I think you are right. My pain level was very high yesterday. Never thought about that. Last nite when I got up to go to the bathroom I idn't think I was gonna make it. I FELT like I was very very drunk! That's a good idea about the shower seat, cuz I hate baths. I'm too tall and do not fit comfortably, darn it! Probably end up drowning anyway! LOL "

" I have had balance problems for as long as I can remember. My whole life I have been called klutz, grace & clumsy. I hit the edges of walls when trying to go thru doorways or bump things when trying to go around. I have bruises almost constantly. I have also been looking into a shower seat, as I have trouble with falling in there. Also I can't stand to shave my legs and end up sitting on the floor of the shower to accomplish this task. I think it is part of the FM and as Star mentioned it seems worse during a flare. Only real advice I have is to slow down. I have become much more focused when I am walking now. I might still bump into something, but at least know it won't be as hard. Hope this helps. "

" I have this problem a few times a year but usually for me it is related to allergies or sinus problems..Can you put up a hand rail in the shower to steady yourself? That helps a lot especially when you close your eyes washing your hair..Get your ears checked too..It may be the fibro but it night be something else that is easily fixed.. "

" Funny I should run across this post just now. I just had a big dizzy spell and got really nauseous. Tried to make my way down the hall to get some water and just about passed out. I was bouncing off each wall like a damn pinball. Somebody put me on a couch with ice packs until it passed. Guess it's time to get the cane out, again. "

" Kel:

My first thought is to look up balance problems in your trigger point therapy workbook and see what you find.

Also, is your blood pressure low and are you lightheaded??? If so, try adding some salt to your diet. There's a thread from a few days ago on adrenal fatigue you might check out.

Here's a link to a great matrix showing the symptoms of low adrenal & thyroid function: http://www.drrind.com/scorecardmat...

I've been drinking lots of salt water for about 6 days now and can honestly say I'm feeling much better. Seems that if you have low adrenal function, your kidneys excrete excess sodium and retain potassium so you end up dehydrated at the cellular level. I know I'm dehydrated when my lips are chapped or crack. I know it sounds absolutely revolting, but if your body needs the salt, it actually tastes good. No kidding. "

" I also have had a balance problem all my life. I have to hold onto something if I am standing especially with eyes closed. "

" I can't do the salt thing because I eat no salt sense my stroke. I do cook with it though, ever tasted boiled potaoes without being cooked in salt waster, YUCK!!!
I have very bad balance, running into walls, doorways, street signs, tripping over curbs, speed bumps( like I move that fast, LOL). One day I was standing on my kitchen counter to clean off the top of my fridge, as that's the only way I can reach it, and I missed the chair when stepping off the counter. I landed flat on my butt and ended up with matching bruises on both cheeks!! LOL I had a hard time sitting for a few days, I`ll tell yeah!!!!
It can be embarrassing when I`m walking with someone else because I keep runnning into them. It seems as if I can`t control my body, I leaning the other way but keep on going into whatever.
I`ve had my ears checked and they are ok. So they (DR) put the blame on fibro and the former stroke. "

" Yes, I have had that problem a few times myself. A few years ago it seemed like it was happening all the time to me. Now it's only occasionally. When it was happening alot I did go to the doc. He had me have a brain scan, but the only thing that showed up was that I actually do have a brain! Surprise, surprise! Lol! So, I guess I never did find out what caused it. Hopefully your dizziness will just go away too. Hugs to you! "
