My son is now 6 1/2 and I have always thought he had something else, but coming to the harsh reality of the fact that I drank while pregnant leads me to the conclusion that this is what he has,his behaviors are absolutely outrageous and most of the time unbarable for the people around him! Most of all I am very sad, bcuz now that I have matured and grew alot since my 19yr old pregnancy,I can hardly look at my son knowing that I did this to him,how could I have been so stupid???Does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom???

First, know that God is forgiving and you must forgive yourself. Second, many people have children with disabilities for unknown reasons. What good is it to you or him to not move forward? Children with FAS have a certain look about them. The internet has sites that include pictures of the features that are consistent with FAS. My daughter is adopted and I suspect she has FAS. She has some behavior issues also. She takes Risperdal, This has been an absolute life saver for us all. It keeps her from having the wild mood swings. Many of the mental health issues have similar symptoms. Sometimes it is hard to sort them out. Find a good therapist and Psy if he needs meds. Find a good friend or support group for parents with children that have behavior problems. You sound like a loving and caring parent. Whatever his issues are, I am sure you can find help and support for you both. I wish you and your son the best. MJ

Hi Cara. Was wondering if school had started for your son yet. If he is having issues in school you should ask them to test him. He may qualify for special services. Even if he doesn't, communicate your concerns with the teacher. Some teachers try to blame the student for their academic performance. Make sure you hold them accountable to teach him and not to brush him off. It doesn't matter why he has problems, their job is to teach, end of story.I hope things are going well for you. You are in my prayers. Marcie

Hi Cara
I havent been on here for awhile as I find FAS difficult to deal with. My son also has many of the behaviours associated with FAS and some of the facial features. He is only 9 months old and we are now under a Child develeopment team as he has started to have delays. I also drank during pregnancy and this is my 4th child-Im 38. Had alot in 1st trimester. I understand completely how you feel. I can hardly bear to look at my beautiful little boy. The paeditrician said he cannot diagnose until he is a bit older. I live in a country that isnt as advanced as the US so they wont diagnose at this age. Its the overwhelming guilt and self hate that are hard to deal with. Im off to talk to a therapist in the next few weeks as we as Mums of children with ANY special needs are not going to do any good if we cannot try and work through the issues we have with our children. I havent met a birth mum yet till now . Push for your son to get help and for you-you need it just as much :-)
