I joined this group when my ALT was over 200. Now it is 25 after 15 years of over the top liver problems. Yeah! I read through all the discussions, and realized that the big thing was getting rid of the thing that was damaging your liver - it could be hep C, alcohol, being overweight, or in my case methotrexate.

So I went back to my rheumatologist, and told him I had fatty liver and fibrosis on the latest ultrasound, and I needed to change meds for my RA. He put me on Sulfasalazine, which not only got me off of methx, but also helped treat the underlying ulcerative colitis, which was undiagnosed. My asthma improved, and I think it also helped my liver.

I hope everyone here can identify what is causing their liver to fail. That is what you need to look for. The TRIGGER. The liver has amazing regenerative capabilities. But if you keep attacking it with ?whatever? then you will never recover. So please, look at everything you eat, everything you drink, your weight, the meds you take, and find out what the cause of the issue is. I found out for instance, that Reactine, an antihistamine raises ALT, and was compounding my problem. I switched to Claritin, and that also helped.

Anyway, good luck to each and everyone of you, in dealing with this serious health issue.

" I used to wonder why so many other people with RA were able to tolerate methotrexate, unlike me. My ALT was above normal before I started on the drug, though, and I am now inclined to think it had something to do with the ulcerative colitis. Maybe feeding back large undigested food molecules to the liver? I had never been so low till after I started the Sulfasalazine. It would be great if the docs were more on the ball, but really, I don't think most of them have a clue, because the body is so complex.

One of my docs gave me an old Pharmaceutical Compendium, since I am on so many drugs for so many conditions, and that has helped me to be proactive about my illnesses. The internet just doesn't have enough information to be useful, when it comes to the complex interactions of meds and diseases. "
