Hi everyone! My name is Jan, and in 2005 I had a ultra sound of my gall bladder. At that time I was told that I have a fatty liver. I am very overweight. My PCP at the time told me that fatty liver was nothing to worry about and that it was caused by my weight. I just had to lose weight and the fatty liver would go away. In 2008 I started seeing a new PCP due to my old PCP relocating. When I told my new PCP about the fatty liver he told me this was something to worry about. That if it is not taken care of it can turn into something worse. He told me I needed to lose weight. I have been dieting since, losing weight very slowly. I am handicapped and use a wheelchair so excersise is not a tool I can use to help with the weight lose. Now, in February I have been seeing another new PCP due to my insurance changing, and this doctor is saying the same thing my first PCP said, that fatty liver was no big deal, just lose weight. I do not know what to believe. I do have pain in the liver area. My questions are: 1-should I insist on another ultra sound or some other test to see how my liver is doing? 2- Should I start taking Milk Thistle? If so, how much? 3- Should I see a different type of doctor for my fatty liver? Sorry for such a long intro. Any adivce would be greatly appreciated. Wishing everyone well, and wishing everyone enough... Jan

" Hello and welcome to our group. I have a gastrologist I see due to my GERD she told me I have a somewhat fatty liver to lose one to two lbs a week anymore would hurt your liver more
I lost 25 lbs but watching what I ate, but then due to emotional stress and my fibro I gained it back so I am back to square one.
I bought a juicer and trying to drink alot of healthy juices, they say carrot juice is great for detoxing the liver.

I know Memorial Day I blew my watch what I eat and liver felt inflamed for days. My gastro said just have to get rid of the fat,

I finally googled fatty liver on here and esp since it gets inflamed and read about how bad it can be, its called NAFLD and NASH.
I told know why a dr just cant come right out and tell you or warn people that are gaining weight the downfalls, Guess they think we just know but we dont.

With my fibro I cant exercise like I wish I could, because I get into deep pain. I am sorry you are in a wheelchair but if I was you I would google exercises for wheelbound people.

I just keep in my mind no Fats Acids Sugars Starches its my FASS diet I decided I need to stick to or should have years ago.

They do say even rapid weight loss can cause fatty liver disease so thats why you have to lose it slowly.

There is no magical cure for it and nothing to help, though they are working on things.

Hopefully this group can battle this together.

" Welcome Jan!

I can see how you'd be confused after getting conflicting information. When I was first told I had fatty liver my GP told me that it wasn't serious at this stage. She told me that I needed to watch what I eat, lose weight pronto but slowly and control intake of things that we know are hard on the liver like alcohol, fats and certain meds. She said that I could reverse it and be okay if I followed that advice. I asked her what was the worst case scenario if I didn't follow this advice and was told cirrosis of the liver.

So all these years I tried to be aware of how I treated my body but was never able to really lose the weight I needed to. Since I developed Rheumatoid Arthritis I have had to add more serious drugs to my regimine. My liver enzymes increased and I had to be taken off certain meds. I was also given the same advice but this time I was told that if my enzymes didn't come down I would have to have a liver biopsy to see exactly what is going on. I don't like biopsies, they hurt and they scare me so now I am taking things more seriously.

Hope some of this helps, hugs jilly "

" Fatty liver is serious! I was lied to about this issue and told to lose 20 lbs. I lost 65 over 3 years, 15 left to go. My first biopsy showed "non-specific abnormalities", 9/11. 5 years later - fatty liver. Lost the weight, next scan was good, liver enzymes down. Feb. of this year my ALT was 300, and I read my pharmacist's compendium of drugs that ALT is not necessarily a sign of liver damage unless accompanied by fatty liver, fibrosis, and then cirhhosis. My family doc ordered a liver scan and it showed fatty liver and fibrosis. So second stage. I read here that the liver can recover, if you get rid of the source - alcohol, hep C and in my case methorexate, a cancer drug I take to suppress the Rheumatoid Arthritis. So my rheumie said don't go off, but he hadn't seen the scans. I went off for 7 weeks, also looked up every drug I am on and eliminated every other med, except Kineret and Synthroid. I got my ALT down to 67, feeling pretty good. But the RA pain was bad and I had to take a lot of anti-inflamatories.

Then I had surgery to reconstruct my right foot was extremely deformed. After 4 months, the bunion part of the surgery has still not healed. I am not allowed to take any anti-inflammatories, not even glucosamine or Omega Oils. So enzymes back up to 200 and I can't see the liver specialist til Dec. (On waiting list since Feb.) I went off the methx again, and this time I couldn't take the pain, exhaustion and mental disorientation. Hence, I am facing death by liver failure, versus living crippled by RA. I went back on the methx feeling like a drug addict who wants to hide the inner pain. It is the only way I can function. because of a real physical disease that is incapacitating.

So I am frustrated, angry. My docs can't get it together. I have been an organic vegetarian my whole life -40 years. I just gained weight when on prednisone for asthma and RA - craving salt did it!

So this long explanation is to tell you to find out what is causing your fatty liver and try to deal with it, if you can. Keep us posted. "
