okay so im a former heroin addict and recently 2 mothers approached me about this situations and the replies i gave them got me thinking and thus this thread came into being.
just so we are clear im not a trained psychologist or doctor but iv been to plenty of pdocs shrinks rehabs and counselors to have an opinion. what follows is just my views I hope they help someone. :)
every addict goes through the same thing all our experiences are very similar.
a psychologist can not can not can not help an addict they arnt trained taught or equiped to deal with addicts well most of them atleast a better bet would be an addiction counselor and narcotics anonymous meetings. I go to meetings atleast once a week more often if i need it. I have a sponsor who i can call day or night. the best thinng for your son right now would be a sponsor someone maybe in their 30s whos well built into sports and moderately successful. when looking for a sponsor look for personality and availability they are everything. he has to be someone your child can look upto feel free talking to and opening up to and that guy has to be available to your child via phone all the time. and yes there are loads and loads of people like that out there.
okay so theres a bunch of movies you guys could make a night out of it but be warned they will have sexual content and language AND they will cause cravings in your child or atleast they made me crave real bad. so movies candy (heath ledger) requim for a dream (dont remember whos in it), gia (angelina jolie i think) and panic in needle park (al-pachino real old). books i recommend reading moth smoke (by a pakistani author called mohsin hamid) and shantaram (by gregory david roberts)
nothing helps recovery along like true love i mean love with a girl (or guy if ur into that sorta thing whatever i dont judge) if your child was in or is in a relationship support it enlist the partners help she be his strongest motivation. sports running and gym help alot this is why i said sponsor should be well built cuz if the guy is into gymming or sports hell inspire your child to follow suit. some self help books your child should also check out include 7 habbits of highly effective people, influencer: the power to change anything by vital smarts(you should read this too). and theres always debra jays love first that just like basic must read for everyone whos related to addiction in anyway.

okay coming to bipolar yeah thats a big big reason for addiction 70% of all addicts are bipolars im bipolar aswell i used to go on huge drug binges when i was manic. you should get him checked and medicated if needed for that itll help.
okay now this is something very very controversial and ul have to discuss with a doctor before you go ahead with it but do consider this there is something known as naltrexone its an opiate inhibitor its not exactly cheap but its good it will reduce craving in general and stops people from getting high if they take opiates but the down side is people go kinda nuts when the opiate isnt getting them high and so they take so much it kills them its happened to people i knew so its only advised to be given to people who are motivated to stay clean. chloropromozine is a good good all rounded very safe drug it covers alot of tiny symptoms that arnt really visible to us and kind of helps in a behind the scenes fashion you should consider that and lastly just a little bit of risperidol (will reduce functionality and alertness) might help
lastly for you i would recommend reading up on codependency again debra jay has written about the subject. you also might wanna read crucial conversation by vital smarts also read up on assertiveness. if any issue or situation arises or there is something going on talk to me or a group about it before handling it
