How do I accept that I'm powerless over my families drug and alcohol abuse? My brother has a Traumatic Brain Injury due to a car accident on August 1, 2004. He was drunk and so was the driver. You'd think that would be enough to make him want to quit. I'm just waiting for that phone call telling me that he overdosed because he mixes meth, alcohol, and pills or that anyone of them have been in an accident. He has been in jail numerous times for disorderly conduct. My mom has a felony for selling drugs. What more can happen. Maybe I need to make a gratitude list that has says I'm grateful for everyday I do have with them. I know that addiction is a disease. But there is help you have to WANT it. I know from being in recovery myself that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. I don't know what to do. I just can't accept that there is nothing I can do. I just want to wave the magic wand that I don't have. CAN ANYONE RELATE?

Relate ....OMG yes. I've been in your shoes. I am a recovering addict (18 years plus) and I used to not understand why my family couldn't make the choice to get help and change like I did. Why do they have to constantly drag me into their drama...etc. Finally I started working not only my NA steps but Alanon steps. I am powerless over addiction whether it be mine or someone elses. I did not cause it and I will not take responsible for it. Learning to allow someone to hit bottom is the hardest thing I've ever had to do....but I"m thankful that those that loved me allowed me to hit mine before it was too late.

Congrats on the 18 plus years I only have 19 months. My brother was dead 3 times and they were able to revive him. And that wasn't his bottom. My fear is his bottom is going to be death. But you're right I'm going to have to learn how to allow them to hit their own bottom whatever that may be. And hopefully it won't be death. Thank you so much for the great advice. And keep up the great work you are doing in your life.

You can care but you don't have to get dragged into their drama.
You'll hit your own personal bottom when it comes to them. After you lose your health to allowing their addiction to affect you emotionally, mentally and physically - it becomes a question of "Me or them" At that point, it is very easy to sink or swim.
