Is it possible for a crack addict or a relapsed crack addict to live a normal life, like going to gym, eating a whole bunch and still have normal sleeping patterns if he is using?

" Well speaking only from my experience with my ex, he has been a full blown addict for two years now & still maintains a normal life like going to work, eating normal & looking healthy but no one knows he is an addict so this is just a way of him covering up his addiction but when he goes home from work it is a different story. He needs drugs to function but after long term drug use i am sure they could not keep up with normal every day life. "

" And if he relapsed and maybe is trying to act normal to cover up the relapse? My Addict is having terrible mood swings could this be a sign? "

" Addicts will use exercise to help them, its been shown to help with the endorphins and instead of using drugs their addict mind uses exercise instead.
My AH in times of not using would go to the gym and spend a hour or two, He went to a rehab where exercise was incouraged everyday. "

" Mood swings come with drugs & without, when in early recovery the mood swings will be worse, they have to learn to deal with their moods.
It is hard to know when someone is in early recovery whether they have relapsed as their behaviour stays the same for a while, part of the 12 steps is learning to recognise & change their behaviour.
Quite often addicts switch their addiction & maybe his has switched to the gym but this still needs addressing as any addiction does otherwise it may lead him back to his original addiction. Does he have a support system like AA/NA or a sponser? If not i would strongly advise it! "

" If he is still smoking pot then he has just switched addictions & will go back to using crack.
Yes i do think he could do those things while still using crack, like i said, my ex still functions as normal to the outside world & he is a heavy daily user. "

" My daughter functioned doing coke and working for a long time. She definitly was a bitch and then I didn't know why she was up and down. And how she managed to work and not sleep half the time.
It was later that for whatever reason she stopped going into work. Maybe it got to be too much. And I am positive now she is doing coke and functioning at work. However she didn't do coke everyday either just on and off. And I suspect that is what she is doing now till she gets overwhelmed again or someone realizes she is messed up. ): "

" my husband was smoking crack for a while before i noticed it. he was working, eating fine but he would smoke it while he wasnt home so i didnt see the mood changes. i agree with loumac. all he is doing is switching drugs by smoking pot. if he is an addict he needs to stay away from ALL drugs or eventually he will relapse on crack or someother drug. my husband stopped smoking crack for 4 years. he started shooting pills and that led straight back to crack. i think depending on how much crack he is smoking he may be able to hide it from you ex: my husband hid shooting pills from me for 6 months until i found his needles. i had no idea he was shooting up and smoking crack. after a month or so he began smoking tons of crack to the point where he couldnt hide it. he lost like 50 pounds, was a jerk and stopped working. but then again, he and his friend went through $4,000 of crack in a week.

good luck!! hugs "

" Take it from a former crack addict, myself, sure, I could function doing those things but for appearance sake for not wanting you to detect what I was really doing. Eating would be a serious problem, but I would manage to do so if it would seem to put you in the position where I could best monitor your monitoring of me. "

" Addiction is a progressive disease. All active addicts are what is called "functioning addicts", they can be functioning addicts for many years, but at some point, the functioning ability becomes less and less, and they need to use more and more, becoming unable to function on all levels of their life, as the need to get high and the next fix win out over the functioning. Unfortunately it's hard to say how long an addict can remain in the functioning addict mode, as each addict has a different tolerence level and drug usage. Each addict being different, they all have to use to get to their euphoria to function. "
