What Did You Give Yourself This Holiday Season?

By Julie January 5, 2009 9:49am 12 Comments

OK, the holidays are finally over and I have one question; what did you give to yourself?  The holidays for me are always a mix of looking forward to family gatherings and being exhausted by them both physically and emotionally.  While I enjoy the cooking, the visiting, the giving of presents and the closeness that ensues, I can …

If at First You Don't Succeed...

By Julie August 22, 2008 6:27pm 20 Comments

Some old sayings just don't make any sense like sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never hurt you.  What kind of rubbish is that?  If that were true I would probably be out of a job!  But some of them do ring true.  One in particular has been stuck in my head lately, "If at first you don't succeed try, try …

Grieving is Not a Linear Process

Today is the two year mark of my mother's passing and I am reminded that grieving is not a linear process.  Over the past few weeks I have noticed some sadness as I've reflected on those final days and life without my mom.  All of that I think is pretty normal stuff.  What surprised me was how much more sadness I feel this …

Families of Prisoners Information

This community is dedicated to families that have been disrupted by prison. A prison, penitentiary, or correctional facility is a place in which individuals are physically confined or interned and usually deprived of a range of personal freedoms. Prisons are conventionally institutions which form part of the criminal justice system of a country, such that imprisonment or incarceration is a legal penalty that may be imposed by the state for the commission of a crime.

As of 2006, it is estimated that at least nine million people are currently imprisoned worldwide. It is believed that this number is likely to be much higher, in view of general under-reporting and a lack of data from various countries, especially authoritarian regimes. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the prison population in most countries has increased significantly.

In absolute terms, the United States currently has the largest inmate population in the world, with more than 2 million in prison and jails. In 2002, both Russia and China also had prison populations in excess of 1 million.
