I know everyone must think of me as a cronic complainer. Please help me figure out how to get though this problem at work. I have the short term memory problem because of my epilepsy, but no one at work knows I have epilepsy. My boss was finally told by me that I had the surgery, he did not take that well. The woman, though, that is in charge there has been training me all along knows nothing about me and has no patience. She is asian, too, that is making it even hardier I have a hard time understanding her at times! She constantly demorilazes me now by saying things like "how many times have I told you how to do that" or "I can tell you have never been in this business before". This goes on every day now. I cannot go to higher ups, she is the owners niece!
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?I need heip!!Cindy Posted on 06/25/09, 01:06 pm |

Get a notebook and make notes for yourself. Its how i do a lot of things. One that has a to z so you know what section to write what you need to remember. I have this type too. And once it flies out the window its gone. Please let us know if that helps you.

I can feel for you on this, there is somedays I go into work and look at the computer and have to take about 15-20 minutes to refresh my memory of what i want to do there and how to do it. I have had epilepsyfor 3 years now, before I was so sharp mind and quick everything came so fast to me. But my boss knows and is very good to me about it and human resourses is well aware of everything. They have told me any help they can give me to let them know, I write everything down. I have been there for 9 years. But it does bother me this a life changing experience. I want to go back to school but I am not so sure I can handle it.

i think you should tell all around you that you have epilepsy and short time memory. If he doesnt understand, you would be better without working for those who dont understand. besides all of that ,which they are doing, being rude, can trigger a seizure...talk to your neurologist about the problem you are having at work as well... may be able to give you some good support..... hope this helps
tc god bless danny

I think you should also read the new guidelines for employers, set out by the Americans With Disabilities Act. Leave a copy at your desk.
Each time you learn something that has more than one step to it (ie: opening up a folder with tabs) then write it down. It helps greatly. Good luck, and remember, you're not alone.

When I worked for the Council delivering mail in 2 buildings, one with 4 floors and 2 wings the other 10 floors an 4 wings.
I took a notebook and wrote down the routes I would have to deliver to as well as posting codes for the franking machine. This helped a lot as I soon started to memorise the routes and codes. The worst thing was losing the job while training another member of staff. I had a seizure and staff said I hit him and alas lost my job.

I used to work with a girl who also had short term memory problems, I don't know if she had seizures or not but she would forget from one minute to another. I was very patient with her and it is normal to become frustrated when someone is not getting it or gets it but then forgets a few minutes later which she did. She did tell me that she had trouble remembering things so I was extra patient with her. Needless to say, I now have a child with developmental disabilities and needs me to be patient with her. I believe that if you tell that person why you have trouble remembering, she might surprise you and be more patient and understanding.

I know you are right about telling my employer about the epilepsy, and I would if this was a bigger company believe it or not, but this is a small company that is run my a woman that is Asian that does not even realize it when she insults me by saying things like "I cannot realize you cannot remember how to do that" or "how many times do I have to tell you that?". I am not sure she could handle my having a health problem, but who knows? All I do each day is my best, I try to learn as much as I can by doing things over and over that is the only way I will master it.Cindy
