I'm 26 now, and have had an average 6 seizures a year since I was 18. Grand mal ones, with random twinges if I was too tired. I was good for 9 months. I recently had one though, where I just stared into open space (unconsciously) and then just fell over. What does this mean? Is it less severe? or just as severe?, or odd that the seizure form changed? I'm going to see my doctor soon, but wanted to ask if anyone knew anything about this. I don't think I'm cured, but what does it mean to have a different type of seizure after having just grand mal ones for so long?

Sometimes when you've taken the same medication for years and years, they change it when something like this happens. At least that is what they've done with me. I 've had seizures for 36 years and I've gone through a lot of med changes...especially when it had been a long time since I'd had a seizure.
Dr will fiure it out for ya! Sometimes, also, your hormones changing can do it too. I had the same kinda same ole for over 30 years until I went into peri menopause! Changed everything! Also, when I got my VNS, I have simple partials now instead of tonic clonis's (Grandmal) good luck and let me know how it went!! Dawn

It's a normal process for seizures to change over time as the brain changes. In a little over 20 years, I've had stretches of almost every type of seizure there is. For me, it had more to do with my hormones than the type of med I was taking. Once I got my hormones regulated, my seizures ended. And DO NOT COUNT ON YOUR DOCTOR FIGURING IT OUT. I went to 8 different neuros before I found one that would listen to me. I suggest keeping a journal. What kind of seizure you have and what went on that day. Good luck.

Those are more like patitmals than granmals you might need adjustment in medication like raised up only.

I have had epilepsy for over 32 yrs. and have had to deal with a lot of meds. myself. When my Dr. found a med. that he really liked, he had me continue to take it (lamictal), but it still didn't completely stop the seiz. and then he would up them. There's been times when I would go for years without GMs, but I have had petits all my life. Just within the past couple of yrs. I started having seiz. more often including GMs. I was feeling stranger and stranger. I found out that I was starting perimenopause. I have kept a journal for my seiz. I have noticed that I'm not having as many seiz. lately as I was a few months ago, but I am now on a hormone pill that has made me feel better. I am going to be having a Temporal Lobectomy though, because my seiz. still are not even close to being under control.

I'm exactly where you are right now. I started out with gran mal about 30 years ago, but have been experiencing "petit mal" or breakthrough seizures because I have become med resistant. I have been taking dilantin but now I have to change to something different. I tried Trileptol last weekend which turned out to be horrible. After three days my Neuro took me off. I took my first Keppra XR about 30 minutes ago, and I'm hoping this is what will do the trick. If it doesn't work, I'll just add it to my "meds that do not work for me" list. Your seizures change, but the ones you are having now can turn into grant mal seizures. Tell your Neuro and see what he thinks. SBCGC
