My son was diagnosed with benign rolandic epilepsy June of 2008, he is 13 years old. His seizures are during sleep. The neurologist first prescribed Trilaptal that worked great he had no seizures, but it caused a skin rash. Now he takes Depakote 4ea 125mg twice a day. This seems to control his seizures but he still seems to have them. Sometimes 3-4 months appart the other night he had 2 seizures. That day he drank several Gatoraids, has anyone heard of Gatoraid having an effect on epilepsy?

It seems like Trilaptal is like Phenobarbital causes skin rashes,
now I took Depakote it causes allot of things hair less, depression, lack of sleep and migraines, so your son might be getting sick because of this I advise you to get on Keppra and Topamax.

If the depakote has been controlling your son's seizures, maybe it's time for him to get a blood level. It could be a matter of adjusting his dosage.
I would ask your doctor about the Gatorade if you feel it may have played a part in those seizures. I know diet can have an effect in seizures. Personally, if I don't eat and my sugar goes too low, it could through me into a seizure. I believe Gatorade contains a lot of sugar and electrolytes. Maybe it is having an effect on him. If this is of any help to you . . . I had seizures for many years when I was sleeping. It was the same as you described with your son. Unfortunately, they started happening during the day. When I was diagnosed with epilepsy, I remembered the strange feelings I had when I was in my early and late teens. I was having an aura and would sleep after that. Hormones can play a part in seizures as well, although they may be harder to detect in males. It took me years until I personally figured it out. I had a gyn put me on progesterone and it made a major difference in the severity and quantity of my seizures. Your son is at that age. Talk to your doctor. Maybe he can check into it and see if there is something they can give him.
