Complementary-Alternative meds for allergies

I am often asked about this in private practice and recently reviewed the literature for complementary-alternative therapies that have good data for use in the treatment of allergies (runny nose, itchy eyes, etc) so here goes:
1) There are some complementary and alternative medicine treatments that have good evidence for use in seasonal allergies. 2) Several studies using different herbal medicines (phytotherapy) have yielded positive results, specifically a Chinese herb formulation biminne and another using 100 mg of butterbur extract. 3) Additionally positive results have been described for seasonal allergies using nasal and oral homeopathic remedies like dilutions of grass and pollen, Luffa compositum Heel, and homeopathic grass, trees and weeds mix. Have any of you used these? Or been to a homeopathic doctor and had good results? Dr O. Posted on 08/20/07, 06:08 pm |

I have been using Cellutech, Inc. homeopathic medicines for allergies....they are not as strong as allopathic meds, but I find they do work. I believe they have a website where you can check them out. They are in Texas and have brochures, etc. that they will send to you...if you need a phone number, message me and I'll get you one. They have a great guy named John who will discuss all of it with you at length.

I use "SupraClear sinus and chest" and it works wonderfully. Especially since I no longer can do Benadryl due to all the side effects!

I have used homeopathic remedies for allergy problems (single ones - classical approach).
I have seen a classical homeopathic MD in the past and the experience was mixed. I would not suggest mixing homeopathy and herbs.

Hi Dr. Orrange,
Do you ask because your patients ask and you are asking for them so that you can help them or are you doing research for a pharmaceutical or other for profit company? With all the conflicts of interest these days don't you agree full disclosure is important.

Hi Sharon
I believe youve asked me this before..no? I post this and ALL of my discussions because I am the medical advisor on Dailystrength and am interested in spreading the word and generating interesting discussions. I have no..nor have I ever had...any ties to any pharmaceutical company. I am on faculty at the University of Southern California and have a private practice in Los Angeles...and am Board Certified in Internal Medicine...my BIO on this site (under "about us") spells it all out...there are no conflicts of interest. Dr O.

Thank you Dr. Orrange. I have been so shocked at what my personal experience has taught me about the medical community that it is refreshing to know there are no conflicts of interest here on this sight.

Hi Dr. Orrange,
I've consulted many homeopaths & other practitioners over the last three years or so, in trying to resolve my almost crippling environmental allergy problems. The most positive change I learned was about acidic vs. basic foods. If I'm eating mostly basic foods, my allergies seem to be controllable. If I splurge on fish & chips (or any other acid meal!) I know I'll pay for it the next day. She had me start every day with a spirulina/flax seed oil/fruit smoothie which I've kept up for years now. In reading about allergies yesterday on yahoo, I found a mention that spirulina helps. Again, this might come back to the acid/base thing? For people not familiar with the acid/base diet, here's some info & a handy chart: http://home.bluegrass.net/~jclark/alkaline_foods.htm
