Hi All,
I hope everyone is having a good day. I know in many places this is the begining of another allergy season so hope all is well to. I have two questions at this time. First I am wondering if anyone has tried using the special hypo allergenic filters for central air in the home? If so any thoughts about these (do they seem to work or are they a sham) would be greatly apperciated. Also any good brands to look at. Secondly I am asking this because my boyfriend suffers with allergies (mostly air polution, pollen, dust and some mold spors). he has no medical insurance but does get some meds. they work ok but often he still feels dragged out light headed and just not with it. he gets so self concious about this. I do research online but sometimes hearing from someone who has tried helps better. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on getting Allergy shots. i certainly understand that people here are not M.D.s but since he does not have insurance I just wanted to hear some input so we could decide if saving money towrds them would be an option. Currently we are also looking into seeing an allergist but would just like to hear some input. Thank you for your time and Have a great day. Posted on 03/18/09, 07:03 pm |

Honestly, and this is just my opinion, I think Allergists are useless. I think the shots are useless. Both of my kids and my husband have been through all that, and still suffer with allergies.
Allergists are so NOT open to any therapies besides meds and shots. The only thing they may be helpful for is diagnosing which allergens one is allergic to, ie, dust mites, tree pollen, etc. But most people who have allergies are allergic to most of the usual suspects, anyway.

If you guys don't have insurance allergy shots can get expensive especially because they usually make you come in once a week w/ check up appointments. The best things to do is find out what you are allergic to and avoid it. Many people don't realize that they are also having sensitivities to food (which many allergists don't test for they only test for true allergies) or even a reaction to dental materials, remember anything can cause a reaction . Maybe he could try to find a allergy medication that works better for him because there’s ton of options including natural ones. Central air can be a good thing because it reduces dust but it can also be a place where mold lives and since its circulating though your home you could be exposed to it more. Make sure the humidity levels are really low in your home so mold and dust will not grow as easily. I have an Austin air purifier and it works well but it was expensive.

Thank you Lobe and Kat for your input. I apperciate you both taking your time. I think I am just begining to realize that allergies is a constant game of finding the right combinations that work for each person. I have purchased an airpurifier and being that I live in Las Vegas moist air here is not a huge problem so thats a plus but we do have some allergy culprits in the forms of mulberry trees and olve trees (they are so bad when in bloom). We are currently trying homepathic methods which some have helped. Again thank you for your insight and have a great day.
