depo-provera

Hello all,

My apologies for making a lot of new posts.

Today I decided to read up on depo-provera. I received my first shot about 3 weeks ago in the middle of my "endo break out". So in terms of pain, and relief, I've yet to see a result- or would classify it as a symptom of this form of birth control.

I was previously on a demulin, and took it continuously. I've found that no pill birth control can stop me from having my period- nor has the method of taking it controlled them either.

I'm now on depot to help my periods stop, but while reading through some user experiences, it sounds like they have a lot of symptoms, and many have suggested that it's a horrible pill to take.

The only side affect my doctor warned me about was possible weight gain- so I'm aware of that.

But I'm interested if any of you have been on this medication, and what you thought of it (good and/or bad).

In terms of period stopping, how long did it take to work? I know that spotting and menstrual irregularities can and most likely will occur, but it's now been a month and a half of constant bleeding and I'm hoping it'll kick in soon.

" NO NO NO NO!!!! I took it for 3 1/2 years. Sorry i hope that did not sound mean (blushes). It put me in menopause and gave me osteopenia. I got FAT and did not get rid of the endo. My mom ( who seems to think and may be the most knowledgeable person i know about this subject) says they are getting ready to take it off the market because of these symptoms. Get off of it if you can. I PROMISE I WILL TALK TO YOU ASAP about the things i have done to get rid of my endo and the theories and such but if you do nothing else, please get off the depo.

Love and hugs, Romi "

" Worked great for my pain.. I did however have menopausal symptoms, I got moody and depressed and ended up on AD's. And gained weight. The battle changed from fighting my pain to fighting my moods. Mine stopped after 2 shots 6 months. "

" My mom had a hyst in 1985 and still has endo. Her bladder dropped and does not function properly, her colon is messed and she has LOTS of probs because of the endo. She taught me everything i know since i was like 13. I have lived and breathed it. I also hosted an endo board for a while on webmd. DEPO to me is the devil. I had a bone scan and it turned out bad because of the depo thus the osteopenia. I was able to turn it around but i don't wish that on anyone that is why i am so (what is word i am looking for?) passionate about it. Can we set up a time to talk? Please email me and let me know.

Pain free blessings and BIG HUGS!!! Romi "

" I think dandelion is talking about lurpon depo, not depo provera... I was on the 3 month depo provera shots for a year before I had surgery and I bled non stop. A couple of years later, I tried it again right after a surgery and was on it for 5 years before I went off. I'm scheduled for a hysterectomy may 29th and will go back on it afterwords to keep the endo away and to deal with the side effects of menopause along with cenestin 10mg daily. Lupron depo made me crazy and almost ruined my life. I also had bone problems with it, but the depo provera works well for me. The five years I was on it was the longest I was ever able to go without surgery. But on the flipside, I've heard of a lot of women on this site that love the lupron and hate the depo provera. It depends on how your body reacts. I say try it, if you have bad side effects, try the other. DON'T CONTINUE TO TAKE IT FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME IF YOU HAVE REALLY BAD SIDE EFFECTS, find another option. Moral of this story is, without having surgery first, it may not stop the bleeding for you until you have a surgery and then take it continously. When I stopped after the 5 years, it was because of break through bleeding, where I was spotting every day. With me, I know that means it's time to have surgery again and sure enough, 6 months after taking it, the pain is unbearable again. "

" Oh, and as for how long it takes to stop bleeding... with me, after the first shot, it was 90 days, then after that I bled for 2 or 3 days a month for the second shot, and nothing at all for almost 5 years. (After surgery.) When I took it the first time, it was 9 months after surgery and I didn't stop bleeding at all. Was on it for 9 months that time. So, if you do the 3 months and it's not under control after the 2nd shot, do something about it. "

" Hi,

I consider myself fortunate because the nurse said I DONT have endo, BUT... I was on depo for 4 years and never once had a period. It as the best thing! I used to suffer EXTREMELY painful periods, so much that I had passed out a few times when i was on my period... Anyway, point is.. I thought it was amazing. I now have the Implanon Implant in my arm but have found it not as effective cos i have had to take the pill as well to give it an extra boost... I love the Depo!!! Bit scary about all those side effects though, kinda glad i got rid of it now. Hope you get it sorted soon. X

PS: sorry if i rambled on a bit.. bad habit!!! lol. "
