Feel Totally Helpless

My son just started at college last week. He didn't really want to go, but I told him it would be great when he got there, and he'd have loads of fun. Except now he has suspected Swine Flu and has been confined to the house he lives in and is utterly miserable and very sick.

I feel so helpless. I have talking to him on MSN all evening, because he just wants his Mum, and I can't get there to see him until Thursday, and everyone is saying I shouldn't go because I have Lupus and it's dangerous. But he is my heart and I have to go, I just have to.

In the meantime, I can't really do anything pratical at all to help him, just pray and pray that he will be alright.

I just want to be with my baby right now!

" Jennie, its numbing. My boy is sick also. He went to the clinic 2 weeks ago with an ear infection, they lost his records(that I took to them personally, they didn't have any of his allergies on record (like penicillians, amoxicillian). He called me from the office to ask me what medicines he could take. I think an educated Dr. should know what medicines don't contain penillians. Anyway, my confidence in the school clinic is waining. So now 2 weeks later, he called me yesterday,he's back in the clinic, the Dr. says his ear infection is not gone, he has fluid in the middle ear and he is really sick now. He called me again to ask what other Medicines he could take. Seriously. He ususally gets severe asthma when hes sick, but hasn't got that so far. He said it was a bummer to have to take care of all the things his mom used to take care of, especially when he feels bad. My stomach is in knots. They think he needs to go to an Ear,Nose and Throat specialist. I usually am very choosy about his Dr.s, now it's all up to him to take care of himself and make all of his Medical choses. I want to go up there to him as well. I also think its good for him to be pro-active in his medical health. He's going to have to start at some point as he should. I just told him to call me with concerns and questions, even if he's in the Drs. office. You do what you need to, but if your health is in questions as well, think hard. You won't even be good over the phone is your lupus flairs up. I encourage you to let him miserably work through it, with Mom over the phone. Encourage him to ask questions and be pro-active and drink lots of fluids. Good luck to us both. This is definitely the pits. "

" I know what you mean about the sotmach in knots, I just can't eat at all. The college nurse saw him today and said it is tonsillitis and has put him on penecillin, so hopefully he will start to improve really quickly. In the meantime, they still have over 80 cases of Swine Flu at the college, so I hope he doesn't catch it while he is already so sick. My mother and I are going to see him tomorrow with a care package and try to leave him in better heart that he is now. My mother is doing all the driving so that I can sleep in the car, she is so great like that. Thanks for your reply, and I really hope your son gets better soon. It's hard to hand over our parental responsibility to them, isn't it! Jennie "

" Well, after talking via MSN to my son for a couple of days and hearing that he had terrible tonsiliitis and a fever of 103 and not eating at all, I decided to drive up there and visit and take some things to make him feel better. And the moment he opened the door to his room, I knew I couldn't leave him there, he was SO sick. So I tidied his room and make up his crumpled bed and brought him home for a few days to get better. He was not allowed to go to classes anyway as he was ill, so home seemed the best idea. He's on the mend and I will take him back on Sunday. Thank goodness for Penicillin! His throat looked like a train wreck! Jennie "
