Hi everyone. I've had an ongoing eczema flare-up for the past four years; have not had much relief although it is a bit better now than it has been in the past. My allergy doctor can't tell me why it is an ongoing case. I had it in childhood for years, but do not know why it suddenly reappeared and has not gone away.

My co-workers and casual friends occasionally poke fun at my dress: long sleeves, long pants but I do not care to share the reason for the coverings. My close friends know and they are considerate. I get tired of answering questions about my skin and people asking 'what's wrong with your (arm, leg etc). I just want to snap at them and say 'what's wrong with your face?' Gosh that sounds mean, but its nobody's business whats up with my skin, and I wish I could delude myself into believing that every inquiry is made because people care; they don't. I take great pains to cover it, but sometimes I have to run out in short pants or short sleeves. Most people ask because they are rude and want to know what's 'wrong' with me. So when they ask, I now tell them I have leprosy :)

I'd like to consider a new doctor or a new type of doctor. Is there any other doctor I could see aside from an allergy doctor or a dermatologist? I wish I could find out what is causing this. I have a closet full of clothes that I'm dying to wear :)

" Hi Sorry you are suffering such a long flare up of eczema.
As for the people who ask questions that you don't want to answer I read a really good comeback recently.
"Why do you want to know?" I have yet to have someone pursue it after that.
It sure beats some of the come backs I have used in the past which have not that polite. I was in a wheelchair & a lady I barely knew asked why I was in it & I said "I'm to lazy to walk" my poor friend had to turn around they were laughing so much & the woman just huffed & walked off.
As for the length of your excema flare I would be worried about that. Have you looked at your diet? Sometimes its something you wouldn't think of that may be setting it off. It can be food, drinks, washing powder just a few thoughts. I went to a dietician & also a naturopath a couple of times & that helped. You do have to find a good one though.
Hope this helps, gentle hugs "

" Hrm ok... when I do seem to get eczema, it seems like it shows up and stays... for years... like a chronic condition then stops on its own. I can try a dietician I guess; have not yet tried someone like that. Thanks! "

" I had an awful flare (still have scars from scratching) a while back, and I was not getting any help from the dermatologist or allergist. I think that's what they call insane, doing the same thing hoping for different results. Well, I've gone to an acupuncturist and naturopathic doctor, and read, read.read. I have gone down a detoxification route, and feeling MUCH BETTER! I used to have problems sleeping (scratching all night, in pain) daily doses of HCL to sleep...NOW, No longer take HCL, and occassionaly take Allegra. A little scratching and some redness, but this is LIGHT YEARS from where I was just a year ago. "

" BTW, I KNOW what you mean about clothing...it's hard. I have to wait for my scars to fade, but there are clothes I'm dying to wear too! Can't wait!!! "

" Whats a detoxification route? Where do I start? Bah, that will probably try to take me off of coffee (I love coffee) but I hate being my own Itchy & Scratchy show. "

" hi i have the same sort of problem as you, i have sufferd with eczema my whole life and it wasnt till 3 ears ago when it completly flared up, where it was so dry that i would wake up with skin evry where in my bed, and i looked like i had severe sun burn 10 times over. I did eventualy get better. but then it flared up again last year in august and hasnt gt any better or though i was pregnant and it seemed to get worst, but then sadly my son was still born so im guessing its now the stress causing it. but it is better than what it has been, Ask your doctor about photo therapy(if you have not tried this already) i had the treatment when my eczema first flared up 3 years ago and it did help! it is basically a sunbed but is done in a hospital where they control the heat and do it all on the correct dosage for your skin type, i did try it again why i was pregnant but it didnt work and they recon it was because of my hormoans. im also now using see weed powder in the bath which seems to be helping it does smell but it soon goes away once you dry your self. you can gt tubs of it from herbal shops and ebay.com. hope this helps "

" I am new here too. I had my first bout with eczema this summer on my legs. Then my law office moved into a new building and I had the rash and itches all over! Prednisone seemed to give me some relief (aside from nasty side effects) and when it was out of my system, it came back, first on my legs (large red splotches) and the hive-like rash. I can see this is chronic, and I am afraid I am dealing with chemical sensitivity to a new building with a job I love. I can't afford to quit, I can't stand the side effects of itching and wondering why, how, why me. I haven't gone to a dermatologist yet, still in beginning stages of treatment. How do you handle a long term condition? "
