Phototherapy???

My daughter is almost 6 yrs old, was born with eczema. Severe eczema. She is of latino decent; so predisposed to this. We've tested her for allergies, seen a naturopath, been on every steroid cream........the list goes on. She has it year round from head to toe.
I am at my end now, she wakes up from a deep sleep scratching and crying (asking me to cut her legs off , or telling me she hates her skin) enough to break any mothers heart.
The worst is that she is on benadryl nearly every day ( on Dr's advice ) so she has built a tolerance to it. It sometimes doesn't even work. I have looked into phototherapy and am considering buying a machine. They are very pricey but I don't care. Before I purchase one, I would greatly appreciate if anyone has advice for me on this matter or had any stories to share????

" Thanks for replying. I had gone to a naturopath last year but was overwhelmed with all her suggestions. We bought one bottle of the omega3 fish oil, finshed it and that was it. I will go buy some more. As for the dairy, are you suggesting cutting it all out? I just ask because I had tried soy milk, which she liked but then read up on it how it is bad for eczema - I feel like I can;t win. Probiotic yogourt (dairy)? Sorry, this is why I get confused and a bit overwhelmed. Today is a BRUTAL itch day for my daughter - she soaked in oatmeal bath twice for an hour respectively, had motrin (for the swelling of her skin) and benadryl which did hardly anything...have you heard anything about the phototherapy yourslef? " dear havannasmom, i know exactly what your daughter is going through., i've been going through it for 24 years, and i've had times where i thought i would be the first persom to die of eczema... i ended up in hospital with severe anemia due to severe sepsis and cellulitis caused by my eczema about three years ago, this was the scariest, and afer that I went t one of the top dermatoligists in my country... i was given an imune suppressant called AZATHIOPRINE, in very small doses, and have been on it ever since. I had tried stopping it to try out alternate medication, but everytime i stopped the azathioprine i had a bad relapse. I've realized that even though it is as immune suppresant, it is less harmful to me than trying to live with the physical, emotional and mental stress of severe eczema. Atleast now i live a basically normal life. I have to still take extra special care of my skin and watch my diet (stay away from as many allergens as possible), but its a small price to pay.

My suggestion to you is to please take your daughter to a dermatoligist, and ask him/her about AZATHIOPRINE in SMALL doses for your child. Its been used safely on children before. It may be a slightly extreme measure, but trust me... your daughter will be thankful for it. People with severe chronic eczema from head to toe like your daughter and myself suffer a great deal... its really a severe illness, always bare that in mind... it may seem skin deep, but its a greater problem.

Please contact me if you need any more info or help... i'm onfident that if you take my advise, your daughter and you will both be at ease soon! "

" I feel your pain, my daughter is a year and we have tried everything... Breaks my heart! We are in the process of this treatment in Whittier, CA it has HELPED, we have had to do food, minerals, enviromental, and everything else you could think of. No western medical doctor or homopathic doctor can tell us what causes her eczema they are losted and I was done with no answer.

Phototherapy/UV Laser treatments are similar the only difference is the UV Lazer treatment does not cause skin cancer or problems with the sun. I will tell you I spend $5,000 to date on this and she has only 1 treatment left, thank goodness!

So far so good, the only time she has a flare up is when it is really got hot and dry.

If I could only keep her skin moist and her to stop itching now that would be a miracle.

Good Luck! My heart and prayer are with you and your daughter :) "
