The Internet is full of myths about eczema isn't it ?

Like the one that bathing, particularly in warm water, dries the skin. That's bullshit. Don't know about you, but bathing feels really soothing for me and I find it hydrates my skin -- er, because it makes my skin wet!

The other one is that moisturizing magically cures eczema. Well, it's definitely important, but I've found that depending on the weather it's possible to moisturize too much! If it's a humid day the skin holds more water (because it can't evaporate as fast) and can actually make it itch. I had this today - I moisturized after a bath as normal, but then got very itchy behind my knees. After kneading my skin (that's the way I avoid scratching it) it expelled lots of moisture, dried-out, then calmed down. So I'd advise using less moisturizer on a humid day (save yourself some money too).

What myths have you found ?

" I was told not to let extremely hot water and harsh soaps or chemicals hit my hands. My hands appear to crack more in winter. I think it is just that the air is more dry during this time. I had switched already to a gentle bar soap, but doesn't really make a difference that I can tell. "

" yeah, definitely in the summer when it's really hot and humid, it's good to switch to a lighter moisturizer. Since lotion is too thin for my skin, I use Eucerin cream during hot humid summer months. You want to moisturize but you also want to avoid a heavy moisturizer that will trap perspiration that can breed bacteria. Don't encourage infections!

When winter rears its head, however, Eucerin cream doesn't moisturize enough, so I switch to plain ol' vaseline. Say what you want about vaseline, but it has never failed me. Even in the summer if the temperature is nice and humidity is low, I'll use vaseline instead of Eucerin. I find it helpful to keep an eye on the weather so I can always wear clothes that will minimize sweat and maximize comfort. "
