Avoiding the Unavoidable: Preventing HSV1

I have always tried to avoid getting cold sores (HSV1) because I knew it can cause complications with eczema. (Someone even posted their experience about it here: http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Ecze...

I am in an open relationship with a wonderful man who, when we got together years ago, understood my concern and took it seriously. He also did not have HSV1 and wanted to avoid it anyhow. So I felt safe with him and we have been in a stable non-monogamous relationship.

Recently I was hospitalized for cellulitis which they are pretty sure was caused by bacterial infection due to my eczema. I brought up the fact that I would like to avoid ever being hospitalized again if I can help it and discussed with my doctor whether the HSV1 thing is a valid concern. She agreed that IT IS A VALID CONCERN, and said that antiviral drugs, while not preventative for a primary infection, very effectively prevent transmission. So my partner(s) could take these antivirals and avoid transmitting HSV1 to me. I thought this was great news and brought it up to my partner.

He flatly refused to take a medication for the rest of his life. He says if he gets HSV1 we will just have to break up.

I am heartbroken. I don't know what to do to keep myself safe and also not destroy my life by losing my most important relationship.

" I've had eczema since I was 6 months old, HSV1 since i was 18 months old and I'm almost 26. Touch wood but I've never had any complications and noone's ever mentioned it to me as even being an issue. Guess I'm just lucky or something.

I presume that you can't take the anti-viral meds yourself? Even if this partner took the meds, you can't 100% guarantee the others will so I'd think if there's something you can take to prevent it yourself you can at least be sure it's been taken. "
