Sunday Goals

This is something that I would have to do daily when I was in a day treatment program (its based on DBT principals) and as much as it was a pain at the time, looking back I can see that is was beneficial. It is much like the daily goals that people have been posting for bulimia free days and others of the sort.

The format is this:
1 eating disordered related goal (ie no bingeing or follow mp or eat breakfast), skill that can be used to help reach this goal (ie distraction or accountability), and 1 goal/activity that is a self-soothe or that will increase positive emotions (ie yoga or have coffee with a friend) or raise feelings of self competency or self-worth (ie finish a work project/homework assignment or volunteer).

In short the point is to take baby sets towards recovery and to re-evaluate at the end of the day in order to find out things that work/help and those that don't as well as doing something for yourself each day to promote self respect.

So for tomorrow my goals are:
1. No purging (ed goal)
2. Use distraction to fight urges (skill)
3. Enjoy a cup of coffee while the sunrises (self-soothe)

" I love this! I did a DBT program and it was great, but we didn't learn this specific exercise.

Can you please explain how to use accountability as a skill? Is that like posting the goal on here, or is there more?

Thinking of mine .... "

" Accountability can be used in a number of different ways; and yes it can be posting the goal on here. Or it can be eating with a friend or family member who knows that you need to eat a certain amount (to avoid restricting or bingeing) or that you shouldn't go to the bathroom alone for so long after eating (to avoid purging). It can be texting someone and being held accountable to only work out for a specified, healthy amount of time. It can be making a meal plan for the day, emailing to someone (therapist or dietician or even a trusted friend) who will hold you to it and ask you whether or not you followed thru with it. I have used it in so many different ways and it is one of the most effective skills for me personally. "

" I did ok today. I met 2 of my 3 goals and I met the most important one, I did not purge and I used lots and lots of distractions in order to tolerate the anxiety and discomfort of eating and keeping it down. I was not able to drink my coffee and enjoy the sunrise but I did get a lot of homework done so Ill take it. "
