I'm new to DS, past middle age RN with long-term anorexia. When I was first diagnosed in my 20s, no one had ever heard of eating disorders. Just wanted to know if there are other older members like me who might want to share their experiences.
Thanks.

" Welcome. I'm also anorexic. I've lived with it most of my life, but it started to get very critical when I was in my early 40's. I was losing control of so many things in my life and I clung to my anorexia as it was the only tool I felt I had to cope. It made me feel in control, powerful, strong, and successful. Unfortunately I learned that this illusion of control is what keeps us sick. It wasn't until I started to have heart failure when I was 45 and my weight was at a critical low that I surrendered and went to an inpatient treatment center. That was two years ago, and after hard work, self-honesty, open-mindedness and a willingness to be teachable that I could experience the miracle. Freedom from this terrible disease. I hope I didn't talk too long and bore you to sleep. Peace. "

" Thanks for your support. Is there anything in particular that has helped you the most? I was at least keeping my weight stable then had to have major surgery and now the old thinking process has taken over again. I know in my heart that I have to change to get healthy but it's that guilt with eating that is so overwhelming. Did you have problems with guilt, and if you did, how did you get over it? "

" Welcome. I have had anorexia with spit/chew,binging,etc. for 26 years. I have been in a real struggle for 2 years with anorexia again. I am 39 years old and really want this to stop. I am very underweight with heart valve issues, digestive issues and loose skin due to no muscle tone. This is not worth it to me but I fear going the other way on the scale because I have been overweight a few times too. "

" I also struggled with guilt. I learned that guilt is just a wasted emotion, and I have a choice whether or not I want to have it. I never thought I had choices before, but now I have so many. I can choose happiness over guilt. I can choose to sit and let the feelings pass, which they do. I hope you see that you have choices over your thoughts (which you create) your emotions (which are a result of your thoughts) and your actions (the ultimate choice and responsibility to yourself) Peace.
